An experimental study of interfacial crack kinking

Experimental Mechanics, 1993
The growth of a crack located at the interface between two linearly elastic solids is investigated experimentally. It is found that the crack may advance by kinking into either of the adherends or by propagating along the interface itself, depending on the applied loading conditions.

Kinked Cracks and Richard Fracture Criterion

International Journal of Fracture, 2002
Mixed-mode stress intensity factors for kink cracks in front of a pre-existing crack were computed. It can be demonstrated that the empirical criterion by Richard is an excellent interpolation relation for the kink crack problem.

Crack kinking in piezoelectric materials

Acta Mechanica Sinica, 1998
A solution is presented for a class of two-dimensional electroelastic branched crack problems. Explicit Green's function for an interface crack subject to an edge dislocation is developed using the extended Stroh formulation allowing the branched crack problem to be expressed in terms of coupled singular integral equations.

Two Practical Applications of Crack Kinking

Mechanics of Materials, 1998
Abstract This paper illustrates on two examples of practical significance the usefulness of the crack kinking analysis pioneered by Sia Nemat-Nasser and his colleagues. The first example deals with the calculation of the pull-out force of axisymmetric headed anchors embedded deep in concrete blocks and the second with the interaction between the ...

Energy release rate and crack kinking

International Journal of Solids and Structures, 1981
Abstract A closed form solution is presented for the energy release rate at the onset of kinking of a straight crack in an infinite elastic medium subjected to a predominantly Mode I loading. The solution is accurate to the second order of kink angle and is carried out by the method which models the kink as a continuous distribution of infinitesimal ...

Kinked crack in a bending trapezoidal plate

International Journal of Fracture, 2001
The interaction problem of a kinked crack and the edges of a bending trapezoidal plate which takes the effects of transverse shear deformation into account is presented. The research method is based upon the complex potential technique of Muskhelishvili using conformal mapping.

Crack front propagation by kink formation

EPL (Europhysics Letters), 2009
The fracture of a three-dimensional brittle solid generates two-dimensional surfaces, which are formed behind a one-dimensional crack front. For quasi-static cracks on a (111) cleavage plane in silicon front propagation by kink-pair formation was proposed and proven by a reaction pathway analysis with Stillinger-Weber potentials.

Kinked cracks in anisotropic elastic materials

International Journal of Fracture, 1998
The problem of a kinked crack is analysed for the most general case of elastic anisotropy. The kinked crack is modelled by means of continuous distributions of dislocations which are assumed to be singular both at the crack tips and at the kink vertex. The resulting system of singular integral equations is solved numerically using Chebyshev polynomials

Initiation, Propagation, and Kinking of an In-Plane Crack

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1988
Consider an infinite linear elastic body containing a semi-infinite crack loaded by a longitudinal stress pulse parallel to the crack face. After the stress wave strikes the crack at time t = 0, the stress gradually intensifies at the crack tip. At some finite delay time tt, the crack begins to extend straight ahead with constant speed vo.
