Crack opening displacement in pressurized spheres with surface cracks

International Journal of Fracture, 1985
The crack opening displacement at the centre of a surface crack in a pressurized sphere has been calculated using a strip yielding model. The shallow shell solution for the stress intensity factor derived by Folias has been extended to derive the COD, and the resulting equations have been solved numerically by a procedure due to Erdogan.

The effect of shallow cracks on crack tip opening displacement

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1986
Abstract Further results given in the present paper confirm that shallow cracks have larger crack tip opening displacements at initiation than deep cracks. This difference in behaviour is shown to be principally caused by the different hydrostatic stresses existing at the tips of shallow and deep cracks.

An approximative crack opening displacement field for embedded cracks

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1989
Abstract For the application of Cruse and Besuner's method to calculate approximative energy release rates or “averaged weighted stress intensity factors” the crack opening displacement field of the considered crack has to be known for a reference loading case. In this paper an embedded elliptical crack is investigated.

Crack Opening Displacement Measurements on Small Cracks in Fatigue

1988
A computerized interferometric displacement gage was used to monitor the crack mouth opening behavior of naturally initiated small fatigue cracks in the high-strength alloy Ti6Al-2Sn-4Zr-6Mo. Complete load versus crack opening displacement curves were obtained for naturally initiated semicircular cracks of surface length as small as 50 µm.

Crack Growth Resistance Measurement by Crack Opening Displacement Methods

1984
In a previous investigation, tests had been conducted on compact specimens made of A508 Class 2A steel to study specimen geometry effects on JR-Curve behavior. No particular geometry effects were shown in specimens ranging in size from ½T to 10T when conditions for J-controlled growth were satisfied.

Determination of Crack Bridging Stresses from Crack Opening Displacement Profiles

International Journal of Fracture, 1997
This paper discusses the development of an optimization procedure to deduce the bridging stress from the crack opening displacements (COD) measured during fatigue crack growth. Finite element analysis was conducted using the center-cracked geometry to verify the optimization procedure.

Crack Opening Displacement Design Methodology

2003
A steel structural member with a stress-concentration factor of 3 is subjected to a nomimal design stress σY/2 where σY is the yield stress of the material in tension. Using the crack opening displacement design method determine the maximum crack length the member can withstand without failure.

J-Integral and crack opening displacement fracture criteria

1990
The mathematical formulation of conservation laws applicable in elastostatics in the form of path independent integrals of some functionals of the elastic field over the bounding surface of a closed region originates from the work of Gunther [5.1]. Some years earlier Eshelby [5.2] obtained a representation of the ‘force on an elastic singularity or ...

On the cyclic crack‐tip opening displacement

Fatigue & Fracture of Engineering Materials & Structures, 2009
ABSTRACTThis note discusses the cyclic crack tip opening displacement (CTOD)cyc. As is discussed, the correct expression for the (CTOD)cycis based upon the effective range of the stress intensity factor.

Dynamic Measurement of Crack-Tip Opening Displacement

1988
Crack opening displacements were measured at two positions very close to the tip of a crack in three-point bend specimens that were loaded explosively. Indentations were placed across the fatigue precrack at locations 100 μm and 200 μm behind the tip. These indentations, when illuminated with a laser, generate fringe patterns in space, and the motion ...
