On the effect of the residual stresses on the crack opening displacement in a cracked sheet

International Journal of Fracture, 2001
The residual stress and displacement fields caused by localized plastic flow near a mode I crack tip in a sheet under plane stress conditions are investigated. The present study founds on the classical Dugdale scheme of the plastic flow localization.

Critical Crack Opening Displacement

2003
A three-point bend specimen with S = 25 cm, W = 6 cm, a = 3 cm, and B = 3 cm is used to determine the critical crack opening displacement δc of a steel plate according to the British Standard BS 5762. The load versus crack mouth displacement (P — V) record of the test is shown in Figure 1.

On the cyclic crack‐tip opening displacement

Fatigue & Fracture of Engineering Materials & Structures, 2009
ABSTRACTThis note discusses the cyclic crack tip opening displacement (CTOD)cyc. As is discussed, the correct expression for the (CTOD)cycis based upon the effective range of the stress intensity factor.

J-Integral and crack opening displacement fracture criteria

1990
The mathematical formulation of conservation laws applicable in elastostatics in the form of path independent integrals of some functionals of the elastic field over the bounding surface of a closed region originates from the work of Gunther [5.1]. Some years earlier Eshelby [5.2] obtained a representation of the ‘force on an elastic singularity or ...

Crack-Opening Displacement of Surface Cracks in Pipeline Steel Plates

1983
A series of 30.4 by 10 by 1.6-cm tensile panels of an API SLX-70 pipeline steel with different surface crack lengths and depths were tested. Measured crack-mouth-opening displacements (CMOD) were compared with the predictions from linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) plus the modified critical crack-opening displacement (COD) model.

Crack Growth Resistance Measurement by Crack Opening Displacement Methods

1984
In a previous investigation, tests had been conducted on compact specimens made of A508 Class 2A steel to study specimen geometry effects on JR-Curve behavior. No particular geometry effects were shown in specimens ranging in size from ½T to 10T when conditions for J-controlled growth were satisfied.

Crack Opening Displacement Design Methodology

2003
A steel structural member with a stress-concentration factor of 3 is subjected to a nomimal design stress σY/2 where σY is the yield stress of the material in tension. Using the crack opening displacement design method determine the maximum crack length the member can withstand without failure.

Dynamic Measurement of Crack-Tip Opening Displacement

1988
Crack opening displacements were measured at two positions very close to the tip of a crack in three-point bend specimens that were loaded explosively. Indentations were placed across the fatigue precrack at locations 100 μm and 200 μm behind the tip. These indentations, when illuminated with a laser, generate fringe patterns in space, and the motion ...

A geometrical theory of diffraction for crack-opening displacements

Wave Motion, 1988
We present a geometrical theory of diffraction which predicts the crack- opening displacements associated with the scattering of waves by a crack in a homogeneous, isotropic, linearly elastic medium. For the two- dimensional problem of scattering of plane waves by a crack of finite width, this theory agrees with the leading-order term in the asymptotic

Crack opening displacement measurements at elevated temperatures

Journal of Physics E: Scientific Instruments, 1970
Equipment has been developed for assessing the fracture toughness properties of steels at temperatures up to 700?C. This is achieved by the direct measurement of the opening of the faces of a pre-existing notch in fatigue cracked specimens under constant load conditions.
