Abstract In this paper a new method is presented to determine the crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD) for the center cracked plate with uniaxial uniform tension load. The maximum crack opening displacement (MCOD) is adopted to estimate CTOD. Based on the series of calculation results by elastic–plastic finite element simulation, an explicit ...

Observation of crack closure using a crack mouth opening displacement gauge
International Journal of Fatigue, 1989A crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD) gauge has been designed to estimate the crack length as well as the crack opening stress level in an automated fatigue crack propagation test programme. The CMOD gauge accurately predicts crack tip opening levels in K-controlled tests with constant K, K increasing or K decreasing.

Crack opening displacement and the rate of fatigue crack growth
International Journal of Fracture Mechanics, 1972Using a direct proportionality between the rate of fatigue crack growth and crack opening displacement above a threshold, it is shown that fatigue crack growth data for a wide variety of different materials can be accurately described in terms of the mechanical properties and two material constants; the constant of proportionality A and the threshold ...

Crack opening displacement and propagation rate of microstructurally short cracks
Materials Science and Engineering: A, 2003Crack opening displacement (COD) along the edges of microstructurally short fatigue cracks in austenitic stainless steel was investigated in situ in the SEM. The measured plastic part of the COD range between maximum and minimum load was extrapolated to the near crack tip region, assuming plastic blunting and resharpening by cooperative slip as well ...

Crack opening displacements of Vickers indentation cracks
Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2005Vickers indentation cracks are an appropriate tool to determine the crack-tip toughness KI0 and, possibly, the bridging relation of ceramics with an R-curve behaviour from the total crack opening displacements. Two contributions to the total crack opening displacement field are addressed. First, the residual stresses occurring in the uncracked body are

Studies on crack opening displacements
International Journal of Pressure Vessels and Piping, 1987Abstract Experiments on thin sheets of 6063-T6 Al-alloy having a central notch were performed in order to examine if the displacements measured near and behind the crack tip bear some relationship to the theoretical crack opening displacements (COD)/crack tip opening displacements (CTOD) found by equations that have been modified to account for the ...

A crack opening displacement approach to crack patching
Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1980Abstract The results of a numerical investigation into crack patching indicate that a modified form of the crack opening displacement approach may be useful in estimating the effect that fibre composite patches have on cracks in thin sheets.

Crack-opening-displacement measurements of a dynamically loaded crack
Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1971Abstract The crack-opening-displacement of a dynamically loaded crack in a plate of Araldit B has been measured using a simple optical interference technique and high speed photography. The goal of these investigations was to experimentally determine the dynamic stress intensity factor as a function of time up to about 100 μ sec after load ...

Critical Crack Opening Displacement
2003A three-point bend specimen with S = 25 cm, W = 6 cm, a = 3 cm, and B = 3 cm is used to determine the critical crack opening displacement δc of a steel plate according to the British Standard BS 5762. The load versus crack mouth displacement (P — V) record of the test is shown in Figure 1.
