Crack-tip toughness from vickers crack-tip opening displacements for materials with strongly rising R-curves

open access: yes, 2011
Accurate measurements of the intrinsic crack-tip toughness, KI0, are essential to understanding the strength and toughness of bridging ceramics. Furthermore, even the most carefully made R-curve measurements cannot accurately assess this initial ...

Correlation between long and short crack R-curves in alumina using the crack opening displacement and fracture mechanical weight function approach

open access: yes, 1996
Both fine grain sized and coarse grain sized alumina has been used as a model material to correlate short crack R-curves by the surface-flaw-in-flexure method with long crack R-curves from a compact tension specimen.

Self‐Seeded Nucleation of PET in a Benign Solvent Yields a High Modulus Aerogel With Ultra‐Low Thermal Conductivity

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A new benign solvent (1,3‐diphenylacetone) enables a simple, safe, and sustainable dissolution and gelation method to convert waste PET into low density, monolithic aerogels with high mechanical strength (E = 20 MPa) and remarkably low thermal conductivity (k = 21.9 to 28.9 mW/m·K).

A Unified Polymer Hydrogel Electrolyte Integrating Robust Adhesion, Self‐Healing, and Oxygen Permeability in Flexible Neutral Zn‐Air Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Flexible neutral Zn‐air batteries achieving a remarkable 3000‐cycle lifespan and withstanding 1000 bending cycles are reported. This performance is realized by employing a 3D physically cross‐linked neutral hydrogel electrolyte that integrates high adhesion, self‐healing, O2 permeability, and CO2 tolerance to resolve critical stability challenges ...

The effect of low-cycle fatigue on evolution of fracture mechanics parameters in residual stress field caused by cold hole expansion

open access: yesFracture and Structural Integrity, 2018
Localized displacement measurements based on electronic speckle-pattern interferometry are used to obtain crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD), stress intensity factor (SIF) and T-stress values during crack growth around cold-expanded holes.

A Dual‐Bioresponsive and Programmable Microneedle Matrix as a Bioinspired Coupler for Orchestrating Diabetic Bone Regeneration

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This project developed a smart bandage‐like patch (a microneedle array) for repairing diabetic bone damage. It intelligently senses signals from infection and inflammation, then releases its medicines in a specific, timed sequence: first an antibacterial agent, then an anti‐inflammatory agent, and finally growth factors.

A Porous Interfacial Photothermal Layer of Fused Core–Shell Carbon‐Polymer Nanospheres for Directional Salt Crystallization and Zero‐Liquid‐Discharge

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A hierarchical hydrogel evaporator with a thin, porous photothermal layer of fused core–shell carbon‐polymer nanospheres enables ultrafast interfacial solar evaporation with minimized heat loss and sufficient water supply. Directional advection‐dominated brine transport, coupled with Marangoni‐driven interfacial flow, drives salt away from the active ...

Crack tip opening determination for a crack terminating at the bimaterial interface

open access: yes, 2006
In the paper the method suggested by Irwin for the crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) determination in homogeneous materials is generalized and the analytical expression for the CTOD in the case of a crack with its tip at the interface of two ...

Sub‐Diffraction Nanolithography of Halide Perovskite via Reversible All‐Optical Crystallization–Decomposition

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A reversible, all‐optical modulation strategy enables resist‐free, sub‐diffraction nanolithography of halide perovskite films. Leveraging 800 nm fs laser‐induced crystallization and 365 nm laser driven decomposition, reconfigurable patterning achieves feature sizes down to 93.5 nm. This chemistry‐free approach offers dynamic control over optoelectronic
