Determining Fatigue Crack Opening Loads from Near-Crack-Tip Displacement Measurements

1999
The aim of this research was to develop a near-crack-tip measurement method that quantifies crack closure levels in the near-threshold fatigue crack growth regime—a regime where crack closure is not well characterized by remote compliance methods. Further understanding of crack closure mechanics was gained by performing novel crack growth experiments ...

The stereophotogrammetric determination of the critical crack tip opening displacement

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1985
Abstract The methods to determine the critical crack tip opening displacement (CODi) are discussed. Stretched zone regions are analyzed using the method of stereophotogrammetry with the scanning electron microscope. The CODi is determined on eight sections near the centre of the specimen.

Crack-tip blunting and crack-opening displacement under large-scale yielding

Metal Science, 1976
AbstractThe recrystallization method, a newly developed technique for measuring plastic strain, makes it possible to observe directly the intense strain region near the crack tip. The shape of this zone and the plastic strain distribution obtained by this method are similar to the theoretical findings of Rice and Johnson.

Measurement of Crack Tip Opening Displacement of Paper

Journal of Packaging Science & Technology, Japan, 2000
Crack opening displacement (COD) on double edge notched (DEN), single edge notched (SEN) and center notched (SCN) specimens with various crack length was quantitatively analyzed by using video-microscopy for a machine-grazed paper. A linear relationship appears between COD and the distance from the crack tip throughout the testing period for all ...

Crack tip opening and advance displacements of blunted cracks under plane stress

Journal of Materials Science, 1991
The phenomenon of ductile blunting under plane stress conditions in cracked polycarbonate plates was studied. Because this phenomenon is intimately connected with the amount of crack opening displacement (CTOD) and its analogous phenomenon of crack tip advance displacement (CTAD), a study was undertaken of the mechanism of the development of blunting ...

Relation Between J-Integral and Crack Tip Opening Displacement

1981
This paper describes the analysis by the finite element method, which shows the correlation between the J-integral (J) and crack tip opening displacement (CTOD). The result is that the non-dimensional J-integral ~ non-dimensional CTOD relation seems to be expressed by a single curve for various metals.

Crack tip opening displacement estimation formulae for C(T) specimens

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2000
Abstract Improved formulae for estimating crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) from test records of compact tension (C(T)) specimens are developed. Two-dimensional, plane strain, finite element analyses of 1T C(T) specimens are made for normalized crack depths, a/W, of 0.40–0.70 using Ramberg–Osgood material behavior with strain hardening ...

Crack tip opening displacement in relatively high toughness materials

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1991
Abstract A theoretical model of crack tip opening displacement is presented which is based on a concept of rigid body rotation near the crack tip. The proposed relation is used to obtain the crack tip opening displacement in three point bend specimens of low strength high toughness materials.

Crack tip opening displacement in a linear strain hardening material

Mechanics of Materials, 2013
Abstract For a linear strain hardening material, we investigate the strain hardening effect on the crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) and obtain some interesting results. The nonlinear constitutive equation is simplified into a valid form, and a hardening function is introduced to solve this problem analytically.

Prediction of crack tip opening displacement of fibre composites

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1992
Abstract The fracture behaviour of single edge notched unidirectional glass fibre reinforced epoxy resin composites under tensile loading was investigated. Load-elongation curves were obtained for crack length varying from 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12mm and different fibre volume fractions of 0.48, 0.502 and 0.525.
