Maximal Crack Tip Shielding by Microcracking

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1989
It is shown here that the shielding effect of a distribution of microcracks, i.e., the extent to which they alleviate the severity of a near-tip singular field, is maximized when the microcracks develop normal to the direction of maximum tension. In passing, we derive mode I asymptotic solutions for a class of anisotropic damage models.

Crack tip shielding/antishielding by impurity atoms

International Journal of Fracture, 1988
The impurity crack tip shielding/antishielding stress intensity factor is found for equilibrium impurity concentrations near the crack tip for a crack tip with or without a plastic zone. It is found that the impurity atoms produce either no shielding/antishielding stress intensity factor or only a very small shielding/antishielding stress intensity ...

Crack Tip Dislocations and its Shielding Effect

Materials Science Forum, 2007
Two dimensional simulations of discrete dislocation dynamics were carried out to clarify a shielding effect due to dislocations at a crack tip. The configuration of dislocations around the crack tip was calculated under the conditions of mode I tensile load at high temperatures.
