Experimental methodology for the quantification of crack tip plastic zone and shape from the analysis of displacement fields [PDF]

open access: yesFracture and Structural Integrity, 2017
The current work presents a novel methodology for the experimental quantification of the crack tip plastic zone during fatigue crack growth. This methodology is based on the application of yield criteria to estimate the area and the shape of the plastic ...

Crack-tip shielding in silica at room temperature

open access: yes, 2020
When water penetrates into silica surfaces near a crack tip, it reacts with the SiO$_{2}$ network and generates hydroxyl $\equiv$SiOH. Due to the hydroxyl generation, the glass must expand. Since a free expansion is not possible for the thin layers on the undeformed bulk material, compressive stresses occur which shield the crack-tip region from ...

Interaction between offset parallel cracks in rock

open access: yesYantu gongcheng xuebao, 2017
The interaction of cracks with different locations and sizes is a key factor leading to the damage of rock. Based on the Kachanov method, the interaction rules between two offset parallel cracks with different level intervals, vertical intervals, crack ...

Erratum to: The shielding effect of the crack-tip plastic zone [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Fracture, 2011
which should be regarded by the reader as the final version. Fortunately, this mistake has negligible effect on the numerical results shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4, so that Eqs. (19) and (20) are applicable. In addition, the non-zero components of the Eshelby tensor given in Eq.

On Crack Closure and Crack Tip Shielding During Fatigue Crack Growth

open access: yes, 1999
Fatigue crack growth can be strongly influenced by crack closure, i. e., the contacting of the opposing faces of a fatigue crack above the minimum load in a loading cycle. This crack closure shields the crack tip from the full stress field, but different views are held regarding the extent of this shielding.

Superhard bulk high-entropy carbides with enhanced toughness via metastable in-situ particles

open access: yesNature Communications, 2023
Despite the extremely high hardness of recently proposed high-entropy carbides (HECs), the low fracture toughness limits their applications in harsh mechanical environment. Here, we introduce a metastability engineering strategy to achieve superhard HECs

Effect of stiff substrates on enhancing the fracture resistance of Barium Titanate thin films

open access: yesMaterials & Design, 2023
Damage tolerance of a thin film attached to a substrate is dependent on several parameters such as film thickness, film orientation, residual stresses, nature of interfaces, microstructure and defects present.

Fatigue Crack Initiation and Growth in Nanocrystalline Ni at Multiple Length‐Scales

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Overview of miniaturized in situ SEM fatigue setup and resultant fatigue crack growth data for nanocrystalline Ni. The presented study focuses on the analysis of fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) in focused ion beam‐notched microcantilevers prepared from nanocrystalline (NC) Ni as a model material.

Continuous Stiffness Graded Metal–Ceramic Femoral Stems: UMAT‐Based Design and Finite Element Assessment

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Functionally graded metal–ceramic femoral stems are engineered through continuous UMAT‐based stiffness tailoring, eliminating discrete material interfaces while enhancing biomechanical compatibility. Low‐index power‐law gradation optimizes load transfer, reduces stress shielding, and controls implant–bone micromotion, highlighting a materials‐design ...

Enhancing Fatigue Crack Growth Resistance in Heterostructured Aluminum Bimetals by Tailored Interface Design

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Different Al/Al bimetals with a single engineered interface reveal how mechanical mismatch governs fatigue crack growth under cyclic loading. Additionally, loading–unloading–reloading tests link the microyielding behavior to the fatigue crack growth resistance, while crack‐path analysis reveals toughening mechanisms at the interface, highlighting ...
