Craniospinal irradiation techniques

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2015
In this paper we present one treatment plan for irradiation cases which involve a complex technique with multiple beams, using the 3D conformational technique. As the main purpose of radiotherapy is to administrate a precise dose into the tumor volume and protect as much as possible all the healthy tissues around it, for a case diagnosed with a ...

A Simple Technique of Supine Craniospinal Irradiation

Medical Dosimetry, 2008
We describe a simple procedure of craniospinal irradiation in supine position. The procedure was carried out with a 100-cm isocenter linear accelerator and compatible simulator. Treatment was with a 1 or 2 posteroanterior (PA)-directed spinal fields abutting lateral-directed cranial fields. Abutment of the fields was established by placement of markers

Field matching considerations in craniospinal irradiation

International Journal of Radiation Oncology*Biology*Physics, 1989
Radiotherapy of the craniospinal axis in leukemia and medulloblastoma patients usually involves parallel-opposed lateral cranial fields adjacent and orthogonal to a posterior spinal field. Most current treatment protocols require rotation of the cranial fields to compensate for the divergence of the spinal field such that the adjacent field edges abut ...

Craniospinal Irradiation for Trilateral Retinoblastoma Following Ocular Irradiation

Medical Dosimetry, 1993
A case study is presented. Craniospinal radiotherapy and a three-fold pineal boost for trilateral retinoblastoma were delivered to a patient previously irradiated for ocular retinoblastoma. The availability of CT-based three-dimensional treatment planning provided the capability of identifying the previously irradiated volume as a three-dimensional ...

A Multidisciplinary Approach to Implement Image-Guided Craniospinal Irradiation

Journal of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences, 2020
Practical considerations dictated a change in the craniospinal irradiation (CSI) technique. We report our experience in developing and refining CSI planning and treatment parameters, using a 3-isocenter image-guided intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IG-IMRT) technique. Two institutional values guided development: multidisciplinary decision-making ...

Improving the therapeutic ratio of craniospinal irradiation in medulloblastoma

International Journal of Radiation Oncology*Biology*Physics, 1985
Radiation therapy delivered to the entire cerebrospinal axis is indicated for a number of pediatric brain tumors, especially medulloblastoma. Improved radiotherapy techniques have changed the near fatal prognosis for children with medulloblastoma to a 50%, 5-year survival.

Vertebral Body Growth After Craniospinal Irradiation

International Journal of Radiation Oncology*Biology*Physics, 2008
To estimate the effects of radiotherapy and clinical factors on vertebral growth in patients with medulloblastoma and supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumors treated with craniospinal irradiation (CSI) and chemotherapy. The height of eight individual or grouped vertebral bodies (C3, C3-C4, T4, T4-T5, C6-T3, T4-T7, L3, L1-L5) was measured before ...

An audit of craniospinal irradiation for medulloblastoma in Newcastle 1970–1992

Clinical Oncology, 1995
The case notes were reviewed of 55 patients treated with craniospinal irradiation for cerebellar medulloblastoma during the period 1970-1992. Twenty patients treated by various techniques before 1978 had a survival at both 5 and 10 years of 33%.

Spinal changes after craniospinal irradiation in pediatric patients

Pediatric Blood & Cancer, 2020
AbstractBackgroundTo evaluate long‐term degenerative changes in bone and soft tissue after craniospinal irradiation (CSI).ProcedureAn analysis was performed for 892 vertebral bodies in 220 pediatric patients treated with CSI. To analyze vertebral growth, vertebral body height was calculated.

Supine Craniospinal Irradiation Setup with Two Spine Fields

Medical Dosimetry, 2009
Craniospinal irradiation is an integral part of treatment for a number of cancers. Typically, patients are positioned prone, which allows visualization of field matches. However, a supine position allows better airway access for patients requiring anesthesia, and is more comfortable for patients.
