Školjkaši su ekonomski važan razred beskralješnjaka, osobito u marikulturi. Osim ekonomskog značaja, oni su nezamjenjivi dio ekosustava u kojem sudjeluju u prijenosu organskih tvari i minerala. Stoga se broj analiziranih genoma školjkaša višestruko povećao u zadnjih nekoliko godina. Trenutno je sekvencirano 20 školjkaških genoma.
