ABSTRACT Curve walking of crayfish Astacus leptodactylus was investigated by exploiting their optomotor response. The animal walked while spatially fixed on a motor-driven treadmill and turning behaviour was induced by an optical stimulus, a pattern consisting of vertical stripes moving in a horizontal direction.

Crayfish are decapod crustaceans that use different forms of escape to flee from different types of predatory attacks. Lateral and Medial Giant escapes are released by giant interneurons of the same name in response to sudden, sharp attacks from the rear and front of the animal, respectively.

Visual Pigments of Crayfish

Crayfish eye extracts contain two visual pigments resembling in spectrum vertebrate rhodopsin and iodopsin. In these crayfish, as in primates, the “iodopsin” appears to be the red sensitive pigment of colour vision.
