Use of the Gaps in the Critically Ill

1996
The specific diagnosis in acid-base disorders should always start with history, physical examination, electrolyte pattern, full urinary evaluation, and obviously blood gas analysis (BGA) (1–3).

Critical Behavior near a Vanishing Miscibility Gap

Physical Review Letters, 1985
We report measurements of the osmotic susceptibility and correlation length for the pseudobinary mixture of guaiacol ($o$-methoxy phenol) plus glycerol-water as a function of temperature and water content $x[x\ensuremath{\equiv}\mathrm{weight}\mathrm{of}\mathrm{water}/(\mathrm{weight}\mathrm{of}\mathrm{water}\mathrm{plus}\mathrm{weight}\mathrm{of ...

Fossil that fills a critical gap in avian evolution

Nature, 2001
Despite the discoveries of well-preserved Mesozoic birds, a key part of avian evolution, close to the radiation of all living birds (Aves), remains poorly represented. Here we report on a new taxon from the Late Cretaceous locality of Ukhaa Tolgod, Mongolia, that offers insight into this critically unsampled period.

Estimating the Mean Critical Gap

Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 2014
The estimation of the critical gap has been an issue since the 1970s, when gap acceptance was introduced to evaluate the capacity of unsignalized intersections. The critical gap is the shortest gap that a driver is assumed to accept. A driver's critical gap cannot be measured directly, and a number of techniques have been developed to estimate the mean

The Critical Reception and the Generation Gap

2006
Abstract Pauline Kael, the era’s most influential critic and tastemaker, observed that the largely unforeseen success that Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey achieved at the box office was due to the younger viewers who crowded that nation’s theaters to see it, turning the film’s exhibition into one of the signal cultural events of ...

Useful estimation procedures for critical gaps

Transportation Research Part A: Policy and Practice, 1999
Many different methods for the estimation of critical gaps at unsignalized intersections have been published in the international literature. This paper gives an overview of some of the more important methods. These methods are described by their characteristic properties.

Alternative Definitions of Passing Critical Gaps

Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 2011
A substantial proportion of the road network in most countries consists of two-lane highways. Available gaps for passing are a fundamental element in the operation of such highways. Providing passing opportunities is important for reducing the formation of vehicle platoons in the traffic flow, increasing the level of service, and improving safety ...

Gap anisotropy and critical temperature of anisotropic superconductors

Physical Review Letters, 1991
We study the gap anisotropy and critical temperature of superconductors within Eliashberg theory. We consider a general anisotropy and spectral shape. In the attractive strong-coupling limit, we find a qualitatively new universal result: The gap becomes isotropic.

Critical Geopolitics and the 1950s Bomber Gap

Geopolitics, 2008
In this paper, I outline three main issues that divide classical and critical geopolitics and offer a critique of the latter. The three issues are (1) criticism, (2) the relative importance of discourses vs. materiality/political economy, and (3) the status of knowledge claims (universal or partial). Through this discussion I present my own view, whose
