Symmetry & Critical Points

open access: yesCoRR
Critical points of an invariant function may or may not be symmetric. We prove, however, that if a symmetric critical point exists, those adjacent to it are generically symmetry breaking. This mathematical mechanism is shown to carry important implications for our ability to efficiently minimize invariant nonconvex functions, in particular those ...

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

A Morse-type index for critical points of vector functions [PDF]

open access: yes
In this work we study the critical points of vector functions form Rn to Rm with n m, following the definition introduced by S. Smale in the context of vector optimization.

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Efficient handling of stability problems in shell optimization by asymmetric ‘worst-case’ shape imperfection [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The paper presents an approach to shape optimization of proportionally loaded elastic shell structures under stability constraints. To reduce the stability-related problems, a special technique is utilized, by which the response analysis is always ...

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Seasonal Morphological and Biochemical Variation of Coffea canephora Pierre ex A. Froehner (Rubiaceae) Leaves of Early, Intermediate and Late Maturing Genotypes

open access: yesPlants
Understanding the growth patterns of genotypes optimizes their selection and management. The objective of this study is to investigate the seasonal variations in the morphology and biochemistry of Coffea canephora clone leaves, considering climatic ...

Quantum critical points - experiments

open access: yes, 1998
We review experiments on Li(HO,Tb)(p)Y1-pF4 which test ideas about quantum critical phenomena in the clean (ferromagnetic) and disordered (spin glass) limits. The outstanding problem of the 'anti-glass' discovered for p=0.045 is also described.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

The Critical Points of Poynting Vector Fields [PDF]

open access: yes, 1988
In a thought provoking paper Maxwell [The Scientific Papers of James Clerk Maxwell, ed. W. D. Niven, vol. 2, 233-240, Dover Publications, New York (1952)] studied the flow of water on the Earth's surface and how this flow is affected by the local ...
