ABSTRACTThe stability of strained quantum wires against the propagation of threading dislocations is considered, using a critical thickness criterion due to Matthews and Blakeslee that is extensively used for strained layers. Given first are results for the critical mismatch at which a buried wire of a given thickness becomes susceptible to degradation.

Charts based on two-layer elastic theory are presented for determining the critical tensile strain at the bottom of the asphalt-bound layer under single, dual, and dual-tandem wheels. They can be applied directly to full-depth asphalt pavements where only two layers are involved.

The experimental determination of the quantum critical point (QCP) that controls the self-organization of charged striped domains in cuprate perovskites is reported. The phase diagram of doped cuprate superconductors is determined by the hole doping δ and by a second variable: the micro-strain e of the Cu–O bond length.
