The association between early corticosteroid use and the risk of secondary infections in hospitalized patients with COVID-19: a double-edged sword. Results from the international SCCM discovery viral infection and respiratory illness universal study (VIRUS) COVID-19 registry

open access: yesFrontiers in Medicine
BackgroundCorticosteroids improve survival in hospitalized COVID-19 patients needing supplemental oxygen. However, concern exists about increased risk of secondary infections.

Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...

Phosphoinositides and inositol phosphates as molecular glues

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Inositol phosphates (IPs) and phosphoinositides (PIPs) regulate diverse eukaryotic processes. Beyond recruiting signaling proteins or acting as structural cofactors, recent studies suggest they mediate protein–protein interactions as natural molecular glues.

A critical review on the consensus around the «Westphalian system»

open access: yes, 2012
The Thirty Years’ War, which devastated Europe between 1618 and 1648, was a complex conflict: it was a religious war; it involved the main powers of the time, dynasty rivalries and rebellions from princes against the Emperor of the Holy Roman-German ...

Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.

EphA2 monoclonal antibody attenuates hyperoxia-induced acute lung injury by preserving the alveolar–endothelial barrier

open access: yesScientific Reports
Supplemental oxygen is essential for acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS); however, prolonged exposure to high-inspired oxygen fractions can cause hyperoxia-induced acute lung injury (HALI).
