Statin therapy in critical illness : an international survey of intensive care physicians' opinions, attitudes and practice [PDF]
Background Pleotropic effects of statins on inflammation are hypothesised to attenuate the severity of and possibly prevent the occurrence of the host inflammatory response to pathogen and infection-related acute organ failure.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

The significance of RDW and LDH in pediatric critical illness
Background The LDH level, which can be easily assessed, was described to be independently associated with in-hospital mortality. Also, independent of illness severity in critically ill children, red cells distribution width (RDW)was associated with ...

Peroxidasin enables melanoma immune escape by inhibiting natural killer cell cytotoxicity
Peroxidasin (PXDN) is secreted by melanoma cells and binds the NK cell receptor NKG2D, thereby suppressing NK cell activation and cytotoxicity. PXDN depletion restores NKG2D signaling and enables effective NK cell–mediated melanoma killing. These findings identify PXDN as a previously unrecognized immune evasion factor and a potential target to improve

Cytokine Levels in Critically Ill Patients With COVID-19 and Other Conditions.
This study compares levels of tumor necrosis factor α, IL-6, and IL-8 in critically ill patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vs those with other critical illness to better characterize the contribution of cytokine storm to COVID-19 ...
