Crop Damage: The Hail Size Factor

Abstract Between 1986 and 1992 a research project was developed and carried out on hail climatology and the economic repercussions of hail on agriculture in Leon (northwestern Spain). A target area with an extent of 6825 km2 was defined, within which a network of meteorological observers was established at an average density of 1 per 17 km2.

Hailfall and crop damage in central Alberta

Hail occurs within a 90-mile radius of Red Deer on an average of 61 days between 15 May and 15 September. A summary is reported by months of various hail parameters. The season reaches its peak in July when the probability of a hailday is at a maximum of 66%. The probability gradually falls off in August and by September the  season effectively is over.

AbstractSevere damage to lettuce involving tip‐burn of the leaves, wilting and death has occurred in several tomato glasshouses in west Scotland. Soils from such houses lose their capacity to cause damage if their soluble‐salt content is reduced by leaching or liming.
