John Ollerenshaw’s (University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK) results from a 10-year study show that because of the effect of exhaust fumes and ozone, the annual UK wheat yield is dropping by ∼13% a year, oil seed rape (Brassica napus) yield is falling by ∼14% a year and white clover by ∼33% a year.

AbstractSevere damage to lettuce involving tip‐burn of the leaves, wilting and death has occurred in several tomato glasshouses in west Scotland. Soils from such houses lose their capacity to cause damage if their soluble‐salt content is reduced by leaching or liming.
