New directions in crop protection [PDF]

open access: yesCurrent Biology, 2011
SummaryThe spread of herbicide-resistant weeds, progress in genomics, climate change and the continuing worries about pollinator decline are forcing companies to rethink their approach to crop protection. Michael Gross reports.

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

NOCTIS: open-source toolkit that turns reaction data into actionable graph networks

open access: yesJournal of Cheminformatics
Background Chemical reactions form densely connected networks, and exploring these networks is essential for designing efficient and sustainable synthetic routes.

An unexpected alternative viologen electron mediator site in tungsten‐containing formate dehydrogenase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
An unexpected alternative interaction site for ethyl viologen was identified in formate dehydrogenase 1 from Methylorubrum extorquens. Combined mutagenesis, kinetic analysis, and docking revealed that aromatic residues near an iron–sulfur cluster enable flavin mononucleotide‐independent electron transfer, offering a framework for engineering improved ...

An Improved Process for the Preparation of an ?,?-Difluorosulfonylisoxazoline Herbicide

open access: yesCHIMIA, 2014
An efficient synthesis of a difluorosulfone-containing herbicide has been achieved by selective reductive silylation of a symmetrical bis(trifluoromethyl)-1,2,3-triazole.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Continuous monitoring of soybean (Glycine max) electrical signaling during stink bug (Euschistus heros) infestation and plant protection measures

open access: yesScientific Reports
Stink bug feeding on soybean pods requires vigilant crop protection due to low economic thresholds. This study used extracellular plant electrophysiology (EPE) to continuously monitor plant electrical signals (ES) during infestation.

Comparison of visible imaging, thermography and spectrometry methods to evaluate the effect of Heterodera schachtii inoculation on sugar beets

open access: yesPlant Methods, 2017
Background Phenotyping technologies are expected to provide predictive power for a range of applications in plant and crop sciences. Here, we use the disease pressure of Beet Cyst Nematodes (BCN) on sugar beet as an illustrative example to test the ...

Dimethyl fumarate combined with cisplatin at subcytotoxic doses sensitizes cervical cancer toward ferroptosis and apoptosis through GSH restriction and p53 (re)activation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) reduces growth of HPV‐positive cervical cancer spheroids and induces ferroptosis in cervical cancer cells via blocking SLC7A11/Glutathione (GSH) axis. Combination of subcytotoxic doses of DMF and cisplatin (CDDP) further suppresses spheroid growth and drives cell death in 2D culture models.
