Photodynamic protein cross-linking
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Biomembranes, 1981Exposure of spectrin to visible light in the presence of a photosensitizer results in photo-oxidation of sensitive amino acid residues and covalent cross-linking of the polypeptides. In a previous paper the cross-linking was ascribed to a secondary reaction between photo-oxidized histidine residues and amino groups.

Current Opinion in Chemical Biology, 1999
The active site of cross-linked enzyme crystals can be further modified by chemical means, yielding a new type of chemically engineered enzyme. In the past year, the characteristics of cross-linked protein crystals as microporous materials have been studied and used as stationary phases in chromatographic separations.

Comparison of the melting temperatures of native lysozyme and a cross-linked ester derivative of lysozyme (Imoto and Rupley, 1973) yielded a value of 5.5 kcal/mole for the free energy of stabilization developed through forming the cross link and a value of zero for the corresponding enthalpy.

Cross-linking in solution of polystyrene containing phenylindene units has been brought about via photochemical dimerization in chloroform or via iron complexation of the indene groups in tetrahydrofuran [bis(indenyl)iron formation]. Both irradiation and complexation lead to enhanced viscosity and eventual non-Newtonian flow of the solutions ...

Accelerated Corneal Cross-Linking
2018Purpose: Corneal cross-linking (CXL) is a relatively new treatment that offers refractive stability in patients with corneal ectatic disorders. The conventional Dresden protocol has been firstly described, and its effectiveness has been demonstrated by several clinical trials.

Micelles experience a dramatic increase in size when mixed with a few molecules per micelle of an oppositely charged gemini surfactant. This size increase was observed via spin-spin relaxation times, dynamic light scattering, and light microscopy. Controlling micelle size with cross-linking agents could have useful practical applications.

Processable cross-linked polymers
Science, 2017Polymers Thermoplastics can be made stiffer and more durable by cross-linking them, but this makes it more difficult to reprocess and recycle them. Rottger et al. show that the transesterification of boronic esters grafted onto common polymers such as polyethylene and polystyrene improves their shape stability and chemical resistance.
