Genetic evaluation for three-way crossbreeding [PDF]

open access: yesGenetics Selection Evolution, 2015
Commercial pig producers generally use a terminal crossbreeding system with three breeds. Many pig breeding organisations have started to use genomic selection for which genetic evaluation is often done by applying single-step methods for which the pedigree-based additive genetic relationship matrix is replaced by a combined relationship matrix based ...

An isoform of 14‐3‐3 protein regulates transbilayer lipid movement at the plasma membrane

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Loss of 14‐3‐3ζ in CHO cells confers resistance to exogenous phosphatidylserine (PS) and impairs endocytosis‐independent inward flip‐flop of fluorescent PS at the plasma membrane. RNAi‐mediated knockdown reproduces this defect, while no additive effect is seen in ATP11C‐deficient cells.

Genomic conservation of Mongolian horses promoted by preservation of the intangible cultural heritage of Naadam in Mongolia

open access: yesConservation Letters
Uncontrolled crossbreeding is a major challenge to the conservation of landrace horses in East Asia. Understanding the factors driving this trend is crucial for effective conservation efforts.

Hybridization between progenies and agronomic characterization of the F2 generation in quinoa

open access: yesCrop Breeding and Applied Biotechnology, 2023
Quinoa is a self-pollinating species with very small flowers, which hinders efficiency in crossbreeding. Therefore, developing an efficient crossbreeding method should be considered an important step for breeding programs.

Economic weights of maternal and direct traits of pigs calculated by applying gene flow methods

open access: yesAnimal, 2019
Multiple trait selection indexes in pig breeding programmes should take into account the population structure and time delay between parent selection and expressions of traits in all production levels next to the trait impacts on economic efficiency of ...

Genetics of crossbreeding

open access: yes, 2020
In pig and poultry breeding programs, animals from genetically distinct purebred breeding lines are mated to produce crossbred animals, which provide food products to consumers. Although the aim of such breeding programs is to improve the performance of the crossbreds, selection takes place in the purebred lines, and is usually based on purebred ...

Estimates of crossbreeding parameters in a multibreed beef cattle crossbreeding project

open access: yesSouth African Journal of Animal Science, 2000
Data from purebred and crossbred cattle, consisting of the Afrikaner (A), Simmentaler (S) and Hereford (H) breeds managed in a relatively intensive but high stocking rate environment, were analysed to estimate breed direct effects, individual heterotic effects, breed maternal and maternal heterotic effects for birth weight (BW) and weaning weight (WW).

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

Performance of local and local x improved chicken crosses under semi-intensive management system in Northern Uganda

open access: yesCogent Food & Agriculture, 2023
Despite the efforts to improve Uganda’s chicken production through crossbreeding, limited research has been conducted to establish the performance of local x improved chicken crosses under the dominant management systems used by chicken rearing ...

Three phosphatase families form a community: The phosphohydrolases that act upon inositol pyrophosphates

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Inositol pyrophosphates are energy‐rich signaling molecules that perform critical functions in cells. Three different families of phosphatases hydrolyze the β phosphate of the inositol pyrophosphate molecules: two have narrow specificities and one is promiscuous.
