Effect of cryoprotective agents on rat cutaneous nerves

Cryobiology, 1975
Abstract Desheathed rat cutaneous nerves were exposed to various concentrations of ethylene glycol (EG), glycerol and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) at temperatures of 1, 24, and 38 °C for periods of time ranging from 5 to 60 min. Measurements of the percent recovery of the original action potential (AP) were determined after removal of the cryoprotective

Platelet Preservation by Freezing. Use of Dimethylsulfoxide as Cryoprotective Agent

Transfusion, 1974
Variables important in the preservation of platelets by freezing with dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) as cryoprotective agent were studied in normal volunteers and thrombocytopenic patients. Use of 5 per cent DMSO and a freezing rate of 1–3 C/min‐ute yielded optimal preservation of platelet viability.

Effects of cryoprotective agents and freezing on abdominal ganglia of Aplysia

Cryobiology, 1979
Isolated Aplysia depilans abdominal ganglia were exposed to 10 and 20% dimethylsulphoxide (Me2SO) or glycerol at room temperature. Results indicate that Me2SO induced an irreversible depression of extracellularly recorded ganglionic spontaneous spike generation while glycerol proved to be non-toxic.

Differing actions of penetrating and nonpenetrating cryoprotective agents

Cryobiology, 1978
Abstract A two-step freezing technique has been used to examine the role of cryoprotective agents during cooling. Chinese hamster fibroblasts were cooled to various subzero holding temperatures and subsequently thawed or cooled to −196 °C before thawing. Cells were suspended in various concentrations of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) or hydroxyethyl starch

Hindered protein dynamics in the presence of a cryoprotecting agent

Applied Physics A: Materials Science & Processing, 2002
We present a study of the influence of trehalose, a well-known cryoprotecting disaccharide, on the dynamics of a protein, the C-phycocyanin. The dynamics is investigated in a time range from some picoseconds to several nanoseconds using different neutron-scattering techniques.

A Network Thermodynamic Model of Kidney Perfusion With a Cryoprotective Agent

Journal of Biomechanical Engineering, 1999
A network thermodynamic model has been devised to describe the coupled movement of water and a permeable additive within a kidney during perfusion under the combined action of diffusive, hydrodynamic, and mechanical processes. The model has been validated by simulating perfusions with Me2SO, glycerol, and sucrose and comparing predicted weight and ...

Cryopreservation of cells and tissues is critical to long term storage and off the shelf availability of biomaterials for a variety of disciplines[1]. Typical cryopreservation protocols aim to remove intracellular water by exposing the sample to a cryoprotective agent (CPA) to create an osmotic pressure gradient[2].

Natural deep eutectic systems as alternative nontoxic cryoprotective agents

Cryobiology, 2018
Natural deep eutectic systems (NADES) are mostly composed of natural primary metabolites such as sugars, sugar alcohols, organic acids, amino acids and amines. These simple molecules have been identified in animals living in environments with extreme temperature amplitudes, being responsible for their survival at negative temperatures during winter ...

Peculiarities of state diagrams of aqueous solutions of cryoprotective agents

Cryobiology, 2009
The phase transitions in aqueous solutions of glycerol and PEO-1500 within the temperature range of +30 to -150 degrees C have been studied using the methods of thermoplastic analysis and volumetric scanning tensodilatometry. We present the revealed phenomenon of cluster cyrystallization of these solutions as well as principles of describing this ...

A deep eutectic solvent is an effective cryoprotective agent for platelets

Cryobiology
The most widely used method of platelet cryopreservation requires the addition of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO; Me2SO) as a cryoprotective agent (CPA) and pre-freeze removal of Me2SO before freezing to mitigate toxicity. However, alternative CPAs such as deep eutectic solvents (DES), which are less toxic could simplify this process.
