The Mycobacterium tuberculosis Rv0132c Gene Product Mtb‐FGD2 Can Act as an F420‐Dependent Glucose Dehydrogenase

open access: yesProteins: Structure, Function, and Bioinformatics, Volume 94, Issue 9, Page 1610-1627, September 2026.
ABSTRACT The role of the cell envelope‐associated Rv0132c/FGD2 from Mycobacterium tuberculosis has long been a subject of debate. Importantly, FGD2 is found only in pathogenic mycobacteria, making it a potential drug target. While some suggest it functions as a glucose‐6‐phosphate dehydrogenase, others propose it acts instead as an F420‐dependent ...

Upcycling Almond Byproducts: A Technoeconomic and Environmental Assessment of Almond Hull Hydrolysate

open access: yesSustainable Food Proteins, Volume 4, Issue 3, September 2026.
This study presents the first integrated technoeconomic analysis (TEA) and life cycle assessment (LCA) of converting almond hulls—a sugar‐rich agricultural byproduct—into almond hull hydrolysate (AHH), a low‐cost and environmentally favorable fermentation growth medium.

Ultrastructure of Cryptococcus neoformans

open access: yesActa Dermato-Venereologica, 1982
The ultrastructure of C. neoformans was studied in two cases of cutaneous cryptococcosis. Extracellular and intracellular fungi were observed. Their capsules and clear zones were thick and distinct, but their cytoplasmic organelles were not obvious. In macrophages, a few stages of fungal degeneration could be observed.

Recent and Promising Strategies for Robust, Sustainable, and Cost‐Friendly Production of Yogurt With Superior Quality

open access: yesComprehensive Reviews in Food Science and Food Safety, Volume 25, Issue 5, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Yogurt is one of the most technologically mature fermented dairy products on the market, traditionally prepared using the two lactic acid bacteria (LAB) Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus. Global demand for yogurt continues to rise, driven by consumer interest in healthy, high‐protein diets with as few ...

Cryptococcal Meningitis in an Apparently Immunocompetent Individual: A Case Report [PDF]

open access: yesNational Journal of Laboratory Medicine
Cryptococcus neoformans, a saprophyte, is commonly found in soil contaminated with pigeon droppings but has also been isolated from the wood of several tree species in South America and India, including the flowers and bark of eucalyptus trees ...

The power of many: when genetics met yeasts and high‐throughput

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 101, Issue 4, Page 1662-1682, August 2026.
ABSTRACT In recent years, complex technological capabilities have evolved, driven by the need to solve complex and integrative biological questions through global analyses. New equipment allows the scaling up and automation of processes which previously were carried out on a very limited scale.

Xylosyltransferases in Cryptococcus laurentii

open access: yesJournal of Biological Chemistry, 1972
Abstract A particle-bound enzyme preparation from the fungus imperfectus, Cryptococcus laurentii, contains at least two different xylosyltransferases. One of these catalyzes the transfer of xylosyl units from UDP-xylose to endogenous cell envelope glycoproteins.

Effects of the HDAC6/8 Inhibitor MC1568, Alone and in Combination With Fluconazole, in Non‐Albicans Candida Species Infections

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 15, Issue 4, August 2026.
This study explores new antifungal strategies to combat non‐albicans Candida species. We tested clinically approved HDAC inhibitors—Vorinostat, Romidepsin, Tucidinostat—and the HDAC6/8‐selective MC1568, alone and with Fluconazole. The Fluconazole/MC1568 combination significantly enhanced antifungal activity and reduced biofilm formation.

From Oral Candidiasis to Candidemia: A Review of Superficial to Invasive Progression

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 15, Issue 4, August 2026.
Recent and limited evidence indicates that oral candidiasis can disseminate Candida albicans throughout the body, leading to invasive candidiasis, such as candidemia, a life‐threatening infection. Considering antifungal resistance and global outbreaks of emergent non‐albicans Candida and related yeasts, murine models help understand dissemination ...
