Point groups in crystallography [PDF]
Two dual spaces are extensively used in crystallography: the point space E n , hosting the crystal pattern; and the vector space V n , where face normals and reciprocal-lattice vectors are defined. The term "point group" is used in crystallography to indicate four different types of groups in these two spaces.

Unraveling the long-pursued Au144 structure by x-ray crystallography
A mysterious, long-pursued structure of a nanocluster-nanocrystal transition-sized nanoparticle is unraveled. The transition from nanocluster to nanocrystal is a central issue in nanoscience.

Elastic‐Wave Propagation in Chiral Metamaterials: A Couple‐Stress Theory Perspective
The intrinsic chirality of chiral metamaterials renders an effective medium based on the classical continuum theory ineffective for predicting their acoustic activity. This limitation is addressed in the present study by employing augmented asymptotic homogenization to derive a couple‐stress‐based effective medium, enabling accurate predictions in the ...

A Simple Technique to Improve Microcrystals Using Gel Exclusion of Nucleation Inducing Elements
A technique is described for generating large well diffracting crystals from conditions that yield microcrystals. Crystallization using this technique is both rapid (crystals appear in <1 h) and robust (48 out of 48 co-crystallized with a fragment ...

Atroposelective Arene‐Forming Alkene Metathesis**
The feasibility of alkene metathesis to catalytically control stereogenic axes by traceless arene formation is reported. Key to the process is a selective conversion of stereodynamic trienes by a chiral molybdenum catalyst, providing configurationally‐stable atropisomers under mild conditions in excellent yields with up to 98 : 2 e.r.

The structure of protein molecules : in celebration of the International Year of Crystallography, 2014 [PDF]
Many people, including laymen, are aware of the double helical nature of the DNA molecule. A few may actually realise that it was the technique of X-ray crystallography that was the key to solving this structure.

Due to the unique capacity for structural control, high magnetic fields (HMFs) have been widely applied to the solidification process of alloys. In zinc-based alloys, the primary zinc-rich crystals can be dendritic or needle-like in two dimensions.
