Design and Development of an Accessible Clip Gauge Extensometer for CMOD Measurement in Fracture Mechanics

open access: yesEngineering Reports, Volume 8, Issue 2, February 2026.
A low‐cost clip gauge extensometer for crack mouth opening displacement was developed from accessible procedures and materials. Accuracy and repeatability comparable to commercial devices were demonstrated in calibration and fracture tests, enabling reliable measurement in CT specimens for resource‐constrained laboratories.

Phylogeny‐Aware Metabologenomics Accurately Assigns Natural Products to Biosynthetic Gene Clusters

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 19, Issue 1, January 2026.
We report a statistical approach for associating biosynthetic gene clusters with their cognate metabolites and demonstrate its unprecedented power for scalable natural product discovery. Notably, it drastically reduces spurious associations by explicitly integrating the phylogeny of microbial producer strains.

Estimation of the Fracture Probability Parameters for Specimens Made by JIS SM490A Steel

open access: yesMaterials Research, 2021
This work established the fracture probability equation for JIS SM490A steel using the computational model supported by the local approach and the standard Crack Tip Opening Displacement (CTOD) fracture toughness experiments.

Sensitivity study of crack driving force predictions in heterogeneous welds using Vickers hardness maps [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Weld flaws often require an engineering critical assessment (ECA) to judge on the necessity for weld repair. ECA is a fracture mechanics based prediction of the integrity of welds under operating conditions.

Designing phase‐adaptive UHTC multilayer composites: Layer width effects on mechanical and kinetic properties

open access: yesJournal of the American Ceramic Society, Volume 109, Issue 1, January 2026.
Abstract The B1 rocksalt transition metal carbides and nitrides are among the materials with the highest melting temperatures. Additionally, members of this group of materials possess high‐temperature strength with ductility facilitated by diffusional creep.

The effect of mechanical inhomogeneity in microzones of welded joints on CTOD fracture toughness of nuclear thick-walled steel

open access: yesNuclear Engineering and Technology, 2023
This study employs the microshear test method to examine the local mechanical properties of narrow-gap welded joints, revealing the mechanical inhomogeneity by evaluating the microshear strength, stress‒strain curves, and failure strain.

Prediction and Experimental Validation of the Influence of T‐Stress on I–II Mixed‐Mode Fracture in Rock

open access: yesAdvances in Civil Engineering, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Traditional fracture criteria only consider the singular terms in the Williams expansion and neglect higher‐order term coefficients, resulting in significant discrepancies between predicted and measured values. To advance the understanding of rock fracture mechanisms, this study introduces a generalized maximum tangential stress (GMTS) criterion by ...

Racial Differences in Left Ventricular Mass and Wave Reflection Intensity in Children

open access: yesFrontiers in Pediatrics, 2020
The burden of heart failure is disproportionately higher in African Americans, with a higher prevalence seen at an early age. Examination of racial differences in left ventricular mass (LVM) in childhood may offer insight into risk for cardiac target ...

Determination of CTOD C in Fibre Metal Laminates by ASTM and Schwalbe Methods [PDF]

open access: yesMaterials Research, 2002
Fibre Metal Laminates (FMLs) have arisen as a demand of the aeronautical industry to use thin sheets with high resistance to fatigue crack growth, high damage tolerance, corrosion resistance and high specific strength.
