Activating deformation twinning in cubic boron nitride
Nature MaterialsDeformation twinning, a phenomenon primarily documented within metallic systems, has remained essentially unexplored in covalent materials due to the formidable challenges posed by their inherent extreme hardness and brittleness. Here, by employing a five-degree-of-freedom nano-manipulation stage inside a transmission electron microscope, we reveal a ...

Catalytic Decomposition of Cubic Boron Nitride
2023Cubic boron nitride (CBN) materials are a mainstay in the tooling industry, concerned primarily with advanced machining of ferrous-containing metal alloys. Combining both conventional and real-time X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the surface chemistry of both a commercial standard AMB90 and a high-quality binder-free polycrystalline CBN compact ...

Synthesis of boron nitride with a cubic mesostructure
Microporous and Mesoporous Materials, 2006The synthesis of mesoporous boron nitride by using tri(methylamino)borazine (MAB) as boron nitride source and a cubic mesoporous carbon (CMK-8) as template is described. The X-ray diffraction, TEM and pore size analysis show that the structure of the mesoporous BN consists in a 3D cubic array of uniform mesopores of 4.7 nm in diameter.

Shock compression of cubic boron nitride
Journal of Applied Physics, 2009Hugoniot measurements have been performed on high-purity cubic boron nitride polycrystals in the pressure range up to 296GPa using a two-stage light-gas gun. Hugoniot parameters have been measured by a line reflection method and Fabry–Pérot velocimetry.

Stability of interstitials in cubic boron nitride
Solid State Communications, 1996Cubic boron nitride is of potential interest in a number of applications. We have carried out a series of ab initio Hartree-Fock calculations on clusters simulating the local environment of an interstitial in the two types of tetrahedral cavities in the zincblende-structure BN lattice.

Preparation of Semiconducting Cubic Boron Nitride
The Journal of Chemical Physics, 1962Semiconducting crystals of cubic BN may be prepared at high pressures and temperatures by adding small amounts of selected impurities to the synthesis mixture (hexagonal boron nitride plus lithium or magnesium nitride). P-type crystals, blue in color, can be prepared by adding Be; they may have resistivities of about 103 ohm-cm and activation energies ...

Heteroepitaxy of Diamond on Cubic Boron Nitride
Israel Journal of Chemistry, 1998AbstractThe epitaxial growth process of diamond from the gas phase on a cubic boron nitride (c‐BN) {111} surface has been investigated. At the initial growth stage, carbon adsorption progressed on a boron‐terminated surface of c‐BN ({111}B). The coordination of the carbon atoms was found to be the same as that observed in diamond, as confirmed by ...

Cubic BN (c-BN) is a compound crystallizing in the zinc-blende structure. It is the lightest among the III–V family. It possesses many unique phySiCal properties like extreme hardness, high melting point, high thermal conductivity, large band-gap energy, low dielectric constant, and high chemical stability. If the problems of crystal growth are solved,
