A checklist of the Medusae (Hydrozoa, Scyphozoa and Cubozoa) of Mexico

Zootaxa, 2003
A list of 169 medusae species in 45 families recorded in Mexican waters is presented for the first time. 86 species (50.8%) were found in the Pacific Ocean, 75 species (44.3%) in the Gulf of Mexico, and 88 (52%) in the Mexican Caribbean Sea. Only 17 species (10%) were common to the three regions.

Swimming behaviour can maintain localised jellyfish (Chironex fleckeri: Cubozoa) populations

Marine Ecology Progress Series, 2018
The potentially lethal Chironex fleckeri (Class Cubozoa) inhabits estuarine and nearshore coastal waters in the western Pacific. The spatial scales of connectivity between C. fleckeri populations are poorly understood. Biophysical modelling of Port Musgrave, a 17 × 21 km shallow bay in tropical Australia, was used to investigate the potential for ...

Behavioural maintenance of highly localised jellyfish (Copula sivickisi, class Cubozoa) populations

Marine Biology, 2020
The medusae of cubozoan jellyfishes have sophisticated behaviours and are strong swimmers. Therefore, they have the potential to influence their distribution and connectivity among populations. We used ecological and behavioural data in combination with local oceanography to estimate the potential of medusae in the cubozoan Copula sivickisi to disperse

Discriminating populations of medusae (Chironex fleckeri, Cubozoa) using statolith microchemistry

Marine and Freshwater Research, 2016
The structure of medusae populations is poorly known. Natural geochemical signatures based on elemental composition of calcified structures are a common tool for investigating population structure or connectivity in marine systems. Chironex fleckeri (Cubozoa) medusae have a hard calcified structure, the statolith.

Ultrastructure of a novel eurytele nematocyst of Carybdea alata Reynaud (Cubozoa, Cnidaria)

Cell and Tissue Research, 2002
The ultrastructural characteristics of nematocysts from the cubozoan Carybdea alata Reynaud, 1830 (Hawaiian box jellyfish) were examined using light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. We reclassified the predominant nematocyst in C. alata tentacles as a heterotrichous microbasic eurytele, based on spine, tubule and capsule measurements ...

Biology and Ecology of the Venomous Marine Box Jellyfish (Class Cubozoa)

2020
This chapter deals with the profile of venomous marine cnidarian species comprising their common name (s), global distribution, ecology; biological aspects such as diagnostic characters, size and colouration, food and feeding, life cycle, association and predators; and envenomation including injuries caused to humans (scuba divers and seafarers) by ...
