Evolution and development of scyphozoan jellyfish

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 93, Issue 2, Page 1228-1250, May 2018., 2018
ABSTRACT Scyphozoan jellyfish, or scyphomedusae, are conspicuous members of many ocean ecosystems, and have large impacts on human health and industry. Most scyphomedusae are the final stage in a complex life cycle that also includes two intermediate stages: the larval planula and benthic polyp.

Swimming ability of the Carybdea marsupialis (Cnidaria: Cubozoa: Carybdeidae): implications for its spatial distribution

open access: yesJournal of Zoology, Volume 324, Issue 1, Page 1-10, September 2024.
In this paper we analyzed the swimming speed, effective velocity, effective displacement index (EDI) and proficiency of juvenile to adult specimens (ranging from 1.1 to 36 mm of the diagonal bell width) of the box jellyfish Carybdea marsupialis. Abstract Although usually considered part of the plankton, cubozoans are strong swimmers.

Ocular and extraocular expression of opsins in the rhopalium of Tripedalia cystophora (Cnidaria: Cubozoa). [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
A growing body of work on the neuroethology of cubozoans is based largely on the capabilities of the photoreceptive tissues, and it is important to determine the molecular basis of their light sensitivity. The cubozoans rely on 24 special purpose eyes to

Genetic Detection and a Method to Study the Ecology of Deadly Cubozoan Jellyfish

open access: yesDiversity, 2022
Cubozoan jellyfish pose a risk of envenomation to humans and a threat to many businesses, yet crucial gaps exist in determining threats to stakeholders and understanding their ecology.

Macromedusae of Southern Brazil: temporal variation, population structure and biochemical composition

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Oceanography
The objectives of this study were to record the macromedusae species on the north coast of Santa Catarina, and to estimate their population dynamics and variations in their biochemical composition, based on the specimens obtained in the by-catch of ...

Phenotypic plasticity for improved light harvesting, in tandem with methylome repatterning in reef‐building corals

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 33, Issue 4, February 2024.
Abstract Acclimatization through phenotypic plasticity represents a more rapid response to environmental change than adaptation and is vital to optimize organisms' performance in different conditions. Generally, animals are less phenotypically plastic than plants, but reef‐building corals exhibit plant‐like properties.

Redescription of Alatina alata (Reynaud, 1830) (Cnidaria: Cubozoa) from Bonaire, Dutch Caribbean [PDF]

open access: yesZootaxa, 2013
Here we establish a neotype for Alatina alata (Reynaud, 1830) from the Dutch Caribbean island of Bonaire. The species was originally described one hundred and eighty three years ago as Carybdea alata in La Centurie Zoologique—a monograph published by René Primevère Lesson during the age of worldwide scientific exploration.

Signal‐Transduction Proteins from Caribbean Cassiopea xamachana: The Scaffolding Protein CxRACK1 Shows Conserved Molecular Signatures and Differential Expression between Larval and the Subsequent Metamorphic Stages

open access: yesAquaculture Research, Volume 2024, Issue 1, 2024.
The molecular features from the coding sequence and part of the 5′‐UTR of the scaffolding protein receptor for activated C kinase (CxRACK1) gene from the jellyfish Cassiopea xamachana were assessed by a combination of regular and inverse PCR amplifications.

Hunting in bioluminescent light: Vision in the nocturnal box jellyfish Copula sivickisi

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2016
Cubomedusae all have a similar set of six eyes on each of their four rhopalia. Still, there is a great variation in activity patterns with some species being strictly day active while others are strictly night active.

Areal expansion of the box jellyfish Carybdea marsupialis (Linnaeus, 1758) towards the Ionian coasts of the Basilicata region (Italy)

open access: yesMarine and Fishery Sciences
The study documents the presence of the box jellyfish Carybdea marsupialis in the waters of the Ionian Sea in Italy, which constitutes important data for the knowledge of new areal distribution of this species along the coasts of the Mediterranean basin.
