Genotyping-by-sequencing of a melon (Cucumis melo L.) germplasm collection from a secondary center of diversity highlights patterns of genetic variation and genomic features of different gene pools [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Background: Melon (Cucumis melo L.) is one of the most important horticultural species, which includes several taxonomic groups. With the advent of next-generation sequencing, single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers are widely used in the study of ...

The Role of Iron Chelation Therapy in Colorectal Cancer: A Systematic Review on Its Mechanisms and Therapeutic Potential

open access: yesCancer Medicine, Volume 14, Issue 13, July 2025.
Iron chelation is a promising yet underexplored strategy for colorectal cancer (CRC) treatment. Iron chelators have a dual role in inhibiting and potentially promoting cancer progression. Iron chelation affects key CRC pathways, including histone methylation, NDRG1 upregulation, Wnt/β‐catenin, and p53 modulation.

Medicinal Plants for the Treatment of Local Tissue Damage Induced by Snake Venoms: An Overview from Traditional Use to Pharmacological Evidence

open access: yesEvidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Volume 2017, Issue 1, 2017., 2017
Snakebites are a serious problem in public health due to their high morbimortality. Most of snake venoms produce intense local tissue damage, which could lead to temporary or permanent disability in victims. The available specific treatment is the antivenom serum therapy, whose effectiveness is reduced against these effects.

Woody and Herbaceous Species Diversity Respond Differently to Environmental Variables in Semiarid Areas in Ghana

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 4, April 2025.
In the drylands of Ghana, the relative importance of various environmental drivers for plant species composition and diversity is still poorly understood and this affects the identification and implementation of appropriate management strategies.

Nitrogen and Potassium Concentrations in the Nutrients Solution for Melon Plants Growing in Coconut Fiber without Drainage

open access: yesThe Scientific World Journal, Volume 2013, Issue 1, 2013., 2013
With the objective of evaluating the effects of N and K concentrations for melon plants, an experiment was carried out from July 1, 2011 to January 3, 2012 in Muzambinho city, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The “Bonus no. 2” was cultivated at the spacing of 1.1 × 0.4. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with three replications in a 4 ×

Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and Antioxidant Systems in Enhancing Plant Resilience Against Abiotic Stress

open access: yesInternational Journal of Agronomy, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are central to plant responses under abiotic stress, acting as both damaging agents and signaling molecules. This study explores the balance between ROS production, oxidative damage, and the antioxidant defense mechanisms in plants.

Co‐digestion of xanthan gum/Lactobacillus plantarum 75‐coated cantaloupes with Natal plum (Carissa macrocarpa) fruits or beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.) leaves on the bioaccessibility of anthocyanins and carotenoid components

open access: yesInternational Journal of Food Science &Technology, Volume 59, Issue 10, Page 6961-6974, October 2024.
This study found that co‐digesting probiotic‐coated cantaloupe with Natal plum or beetroot leaves enhances the bioaccessibility of anthocyanins and carotenoids and improves antioxidant activities. It also maintained viable cells of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 75, providing insights into ingredient interactions.
