The role of cultivated pastures in milk production in South Africa
Proceedings of the Annual Congresses of the Grassland Society of Southern Africa, 1969A brief survey of existing methods of milk production by the Republic of South Africa is made, together with an appreciation of the role and importance of established pastures in relation to these. The cost of milk is discussed in relation to two roughage plans: the one being based on ordinarily accepted methods of roughage provision, and the other on ...

Energy efficiency of multivariate cultivation techniques in pasture forage production

Mixed grazing by suckler cows, calves and lambs in a cultivated pasture
Livestock Science, 2012Abstract The influence of mixed-species grazing on herbage, animal production and internal parasites was studied in June–August 2003 and 2004. Two grazing treatments with two replicates were used: eight Hereford suckler cow-calf pairs alone and eight suckler cow-calf pairs together with 45 male lambs.

Performance of Manchega ewes grazing cereal stubbles and cultivated pastures
Small Ruminant Research, 1992[EN] Sparsity and seasonality of most Mediterranean grazing land resources requires diversification in order to complete full cycles of pregnancy and lactation, including grazing winter cereal stubbles and stockpiled sown pastures. Early November was the mean lambing date.

SUMMARYThe influence of liming and method of cultivation on the dry matter yield, botanical composition and seedling density of a rainfed pasture grown in a Mediterranean environment from a commercial seed mixture based on subterranean clover was investigated. Liming resulted in a 2.5-fold increase in pasture dry matter yield.

Capacity of high milk yielding goats for utilizing cultivated pasture
Small Ruminant Research, 2008Nine experiments with 120 Alpine goats lasting from 3 months to 3 years have been carried out at the experimental station of Le Pradel, South-eastern France on the management of grazing high yielding goats (1000–1100 kg milk/goat/year), the continuous or rotational grazing, the early or late turn-out, and the strategy of concentrate supply so as to get

Sustainable intensification of cultivated pastures using multiple herbivore species
African Journal of Range & Forage Science, 2015Demand for animal products is growing faster than for any other agricultural product. As a result, pressure for greater output from cultivated pastures is expected to increase. Assuming cultivated pasture area will decrease with land degradation, conversion to grain crops or urban expansion, the only alternative is to increase productivity per area. We

Some effects of cultivation and waterlogging on the availability of phosphorus in pasture soils
Australian Journal of Agricultural Research, 1965Compared with growth on undisturbed soil, uniform mixing of the surface 4 in. of pasture soils caused a decrease in the yield of subterranean clover grown in pot culture. This was shown to be due to lowered availability of the soil phosphorus and was probably brought about by sorption of the available phosphorus, which had accumulated at the soil ...

Effect of species and cultivation on the responses to phosphate of annual pastures and crops
Australian Journal of Agricultural Research, 1978Three crop species, sand-plain lupin, Lupinus cosentinii L. (cv. Chapman), narrow-leaf lupin, L. angustifolius L. (cv. Uniharvest), and wheat, Triticum aestivium (cv. Gamenya), were grown under field conditions in soil fertilized then cultivated to 10 cm depth. Two annual pasture species, subterranean clover, Trifolium subterraneum L. (cv. Daliak), and
