Stochastic parameterization: uncertainties from convection [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
In 2005, the ECMWF held a workshop on stochastic parameterisation, at which the convection was seen as being a key issue. That much is clear from the working group reports and particularly the statement from working group 1 that “it is clear that a ...

Miniaturized Magnetic Tip Design for Endoluminal Vine Robot Navigation

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
A magnetic tip mount is designed for a miniaturized 7 mm soft‐growing vine robot to enable wireless magnetic steering and onboard imaging, while preserving a 3 mm working channel. The internal–external ring magnets design balances magnetic attachment with low eversion pressure. Experiments demonstrate ±90° steering, 34 mm bending radius, and successful

Validation for a tropical belt version of WRF: sensitivity tests on radiation and cumulus convection parameterizations

open access: yesAtmospheric and Oceanic Science Letters, 2019
Version 3.9 of WRF-ARW is run with a tropical belt configuration for a period from 2012 to 2016 in this study. The domain covers the entire tropics between 45°S and 45°N with a spatial resolution of about 45 km.

Impacts of Cumulus Parameterization Schemes on the Simulation of Interannual and Interdecadal Variation of Meiyu in the Middle and Lower Reaches of the Yangtze River by Using Regional Climate Model 4

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2020
This study reveals the impacts of cumulus parameterization schemes (CPSs) on the simulation of interannual and interdecadal variations of Meiyu in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River valley (Yangtze Meiyu) by using a regional climate model.

Coastal Tropical Convection in a Stochastic Modeling Framework

open access: yes, 2017
Recent research has suggested that the overall dependence of convection near coasts on large-scale atmospheric conditions is weaker than over the open ocean or inland areas. This is due to the fact that in coastal regions convection is often supported by

Coupled Above‐ and Belowground Ecosystem Stability Worldwide

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Are the worlds above and below our feet in sync? This global exploration reveals an entangled fate between above‐ and belowground ecosystem stability. It identifies arid regions as hotspots for this coupling and highlights temperature stability as a vital safeguard for maintaining ecosystem balance across our warming planet.

Key ingredients in regional climate modelling for improving the representation of typhoon tracks and intensities [PDF]

open access: yesHydrology and Earth System Sciences
There is evidence of an increased frequency of rapid intensification events of tropical cyclones (TCs) in global offshore regions. This will not only result in increased peak wind speeds but may lead to more intense heavy precipitation events, leading to

A unified parameterization of clouds and turbulence using CLUBB and subcolumns in the Community Atmosphere Model [PDF]

open access: yesGeoscientific Model Development, 2015
Most global climate models parameterize separate cloud types using separate parameterizations. This approach has several disadvantages, including obscure interactions between parameterizations and inaccurate triggering of cumulus parameterizations ...

Sensitivity of Surface Ozone Simulation to Cumulus Parameterization

open access: yesJournal of Applied Meteorology and Climatology, 2008
Abstract Different cumulus schemes cause significant discrepancies in simulated precipitation, cloud cover, and temperature, which in turn lead to remarkable differences in simulated biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) emissions and surface ozone concentrations.

Organ‐Specific and Conserved Regulatory Logic Orchestrates Gene Expression in the Embryonic Mesothelium

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Integrated multi‐omic profiling maps the gene‐regulatory landscape of the coelomic mesothelium across heart, lung, and pancreas. A cardiac‐restricted regulatory program is uncovered in which TBX20 activates heart mesothelial (epicardial) cis‐regulatory elements, while MAF emerges as a conserved regulator of mesothelial identity.
