Social context prevents heat hormetic effects against mutagens during fish development

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study shows that sublethal heat stress protects fish embryos against ultraviolet radiation, a concept known as ‘hormesis’. However, chemical stress transmission between fish embryos negates this protective effect. By providing evidence for the mechanistic molecular basis of heat stress hormesis and interindividual stress communication, this study ...

Cured Poly(ethylene-g-maleic anhydride)/Graphene Nanocomposite: Properties and Characterization [PDF]

open access: yesMechanics of Advanced Composite Structures, 2018
Poly(ethylene-g-maleic anhydride) (PEMA)/graphene nanoplatelets (xGn) (PEMA-xGn) composites were prepared by melt dispersion in an internal shear mixer.

Optimal Curing Strategy for Competing Epidemics Spreading over Complex Networks [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Optimal curing strategy of suppressing competing epidemics spreading over complex networks is a critical issue. In this paper, we first establish a framework to capture the coupling between two epidemics, and then analyze the system's equilibrium states by categorizing them into three classes, and deriving their stability conditions.

At the Limits of Cure

open access: yes, 2021
Can a history of cure be more than a history of how disease comes to an end? In 1950s Madras, an international team of researchers demonstrated that antibiotics were effective in treating tuberculosis. But just half a century later, reports out of Mumbai stoked fears about the spread of totally drug-resistant strains of the disease.

STAT3 expression is reduced in cardiac pericytes in HFpEF and its loss reduces cellular adhesion and induces pericyte senescence

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) accounts for half of the heart failure cases. It is characterised by microvascular dysfunction, associated with reduced pericyte coverage and diminished STAT3 expression in pericytes. Loss of STAT3 impairs pericyte adhesion, promotes senescence, and activates a pro‐fibrotic gene program.

Effect of Moisture Absorption on Curing of Wind Blades during Repair [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
Efficient structural repair of wind turbine blades is essential to limiting global warming and reducing the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE). Repairs carried out up-tower are sensitive to environmental conditions whose effect on the material properties during processing needs to be accounted for to accurately predict the repair outcome.

A new latent cure rate marker model for survival data [PDF]

open access: yesAnnals of Applied Statistics 2009, Vol. 3, No. 3, 1124-1146, 2009
To address an important risk classification issue that arises in clinical practice, we propose a new mixture model via latent cure rate markers for survival data with a cure fraction. In the proposed model, the latent cure rate markers are modeled via a multinomial logistic regression and patients who share the same cure rate are classified into the ...

When is a network epidemic hard to eliminate?

open access: yes, 2015
We consider the propagation of a contagion process (epidemic) on a network and study the problem of dynamically allocating a fixed curing budget to the nodes of the graph, at each time instant.

Decoding the dual role of autophagy in cancer through transcriptional and epigenetic regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Transcriptional and epigenetic regulation controls autophagy, which exerts context‐dependent effects on cancer: Autophagy suppresses tumorigenesis by maintaining cellular homeostasis or promotes tumor progression by supporting survival under stress. In this “In a Nutshell” article, we explore the intricate mechanisms of the dual function of autophagy ...

npcure: An R Package for Nonparametric Inference in Mixture Cure Models [PDF]

open access: yesThe R Journal, 2021, 13:1, 21-41
Mixture cure models have been widely used to analyze survival data with a cure fraction. They assume that a subgroup of the individuals under study will never experience the event (cured subjects). So, the goal is twofold: to study both the cure probability and the failure time of the uncured individuals through a proper survival function (latency ...
