Automatic Bayesian Curve Fitting

open access: yesJournal of the Royal Statistical Society Series B: Statistical Methodology, 1998
Summary A method of estimating a variety of curves by a sequence of piecewise polynomials is proposed, motivated by a Bayesian model and an appropriate summary of the resulting posterior distribution. A joint distribution is set up over both the number and the position of the knots defining the piecewise polynomials.

Curve-Fitting for Bayesians? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Bayesians often assume, suppose, or conjecture that for any reasonable explication of the notion of simplicity a prior can be designed that will enforce a preference for hypotheses simpler in just that sense.

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

The QCD string tension curve, the ferromagnetic magnetization, and the quark-antiquark confining potential at finite Temperature

open access: yes, 2010
We study the string tension as a function of temperature, fitting the SU(3) lattice QCD finite temperature free energy potentials computed by the Bielefeld group.

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

Curve fitting with the Bubble Board [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The bubble board is a device to create simultaneously 56 identical soap bubbles. Students study the relation between time and the number of remaining bubbles for different concentrations of glycerin and use linear, exponential, and logistic decay ...

Aggressive prostate cancer is associated with pericyte dysfunction

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Tumor‐produced TGF‐β drives pericyte dysfunction in prostate cancer. This dysfunction is characterized by downregulation of some canonical pericyte markers (i.e., DES, CSPG4, and ACTA2) while maintaining the expression of others (i.e., PDGFRB, NOTCH3, and RGS5).

Piecewise cubic curve-fitting algorithm [PDF]

open access: yesMathematics of Computation, 1987
We give a piecewise cubic curve fitting algorithm which preserves monotonicity of the data. The algorithm has a higher order of convergence than the Fritsch-Carlson algorithm and is simpler than the Eisenstat-Jackson-Lewis algorithm.
