Cutting Fluids

1998
Abstract Cutting fluids play a major role in increasing productivity and reducing costs by making possible the use of higher cutting speeds, higher feed rates, and greater depths of cut. After listing the functions of cutting fluids, this article then covers the major types, characteristics, advantages and limitations of cutting and ...

METAL CUTTING FLUIDS

Industrial Lubrication and Tribology, 1978
In the late 19th century, work attributed to a Mr F. W. Taylor showed that water flooding a cutting area permitted a great increase in cutting speeds. Prior to this cutting was performed dry, at very slow speeds, but it was found that water gave an easier removal of swarf, enabling the cutting speed to be increased by some 40 to 50%.

Cutting Fluids and Corrosion

Anti-Corrosion Methods and Materials, 1954
Valuable information on the corrosion of drilling, turning, milling and grinding machine surfaces by soluble cutting oils was brought to light by tests carried out by the Production Engineering Research Association. Eleven soluble oils were analysed and subjected to a simple test, described in this article, which users of such oils can carry out for ...

Nano Cutting Fluids

2017
This chapter focuses on the preparation, characterization, and application of nanofluids as cutting fluids in machining. Case studies of two different methods of application, drop-by-drop and mist application, of cutting fluids in minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) are presented. Nanofluids are suspensions of nanoparticles in a base fluid.

CUTTING FLUID EMULSIONS

Industrial Lubrication and Tribology, 1979
WATERMIX fluids are formulated to combine the lubricating properties of oil with the cooling properties of water. They are essentially blends of mineral oil, emulsifier, corrosion inhibitor and, possibly, biocide.
