Gut Microbe Fermentation of Moringa oleifera Leaf Extract Increases Measurable Polyphenols and Improves Barrier Function in a Cell Culture Model

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 14, Issue 6, December 2025.
Three gut bacteria isolates were tested in vitro for their ability to grow and produce detectable polyphenols during fermentation of M. oleifera aqueous leaf extract. B. longum had the highest increase of soluble polyphenols during fermentation and B. longum‐fermented M. oleifera significantly increased TEER readings in a Caco‐2 monolayer.

Fungal‐Bacterial Dysbiosis in IBD: Microbial Biomarkers of Disease Activity

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 14, Issue 6, December 2025.
This study characterizes bacterial, fungal, and viral communities in Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis using intestinal and faecal samples. Distinct microbial signatures and inter‐kingdom interactions were identified, with taxa such as Prevotella, Fusobacterium, and Roseburia linked to disease activity.

Microbial Transformation of Dietary Glycerol Contributes to Intestinal Acrolein Formation and Urinary Excretion

open access: yesMolecular Nutrition &Food Research, Volume 69, Issue 24, December 2025.
The double unsaturated aldehyde acrolein has been implicated in a number of human disorders. Investigating a cohort of 20 participants housed at defined conditions based on a combination of urinary and fecal biomarkers, we observed that glycerol was readily available to intestinal microbiota.
