Cladistics, 1997
Intended to support three‐taxon analysis (3ta), the proposal that all character states be regarded as terminal would instead undercut that method. The same is true of the idea that cladistic methods should not account for plesiomorphies. Parsimony does not correspond to interpretation 1 for incompletely resolved cladograms.

Fraud is an ancient crime and one that annually causes hundreds of billions of dollars in losses. We develop an evolutionary theory that suggests cyclical behavior in frauds should be common. We perform a wavelet analysis of the frequencies of fraudulent and nonfraudulent offenses.

A recent symposium celebrated the publication, 25 years ago, of the first reliable paleoclimatic evidence for Milankovitch's theory that regular changes in Earth's orbit around the Sun drive climate cycles on Earth. As [Crowley][1] discusses in his Perspective, Milankovitch cycles are now widely recognized in paleoclimatology and beyond, but the ...

Violence Against Women, 2003
The domestic violence literature documents the cyclical nature of women's relationships with violent partners. Furthermore, research on low-income women also indicates that many cycle between welfare and low-wage work. This qualitative study illustrates how these cycles intersect in the lives of 17 low-income battered women.

We study twenty years of monthly production data for 11 manufacturing industries in 19 countries. Using the fact that in some countries production virtually shuts down for one summer month, together with the differences in the timing of aggregate cyclical fluctuations, we are able to learn about the cost structure of different industries.

Dynastic cycles have been recognized for thousands of years, and a comprehensive theory explaining them was developed by Ibn Khaldun of North Africa in the fourteenth century. Recently updated by Peter Turchin, it has shown predictive power. In a typical cycle, a successful leader unites followers, conquers the country, and founds a dynasty. Over time,

By introducing the mathematical concepts of eccentricity, epicycles, and equant, Ptolemy was able to accurately describe the orbit of planets and predict the positions of the Sun, the Moon, and the planets hundreds of years into the future. His work, summarized in the book Almagest , represented the highest point of science in the ancient times.

Some organisms possess enzymes that allow the net conversion of acetyl-CoA to succinate. This is accomplished by the glyoxylate cycle. The overall reaction of this cycle is: 2 acetyl-CoA + NAD + 2 H2O -> succinate + 2 CoA-SH + NADH + H+ As becomes clear from case studies presented, except from prokaryotes, this pathway does not operate as a real ...
