Consecutive Exotropia Following Surgically Corrected Cyclic Esotropia
American Orthoptic Journal, 2007Cyclic esotropia is a rare form of strabismus consisting of regular intervals of esotropia alternating with periods of orthophoria in a rhythmic/cyclic manner. In the vast majority of cases, surgery appears to permanently correct the esotropia, with no sequelae after years of follow-up.

Acquired Cyclic Esotropia in an Adult
American Journal of Ophthalmology, 1981A 67-year-old women developed periodic alternate-day esotropia, documented with videotape, 16-mm film, and quantitative eye-movement recordings, after retinal detachment surgery. The eye movements suggested that central reprocessing and adaptation to a peripheral defect was in part responsible for this adult form of acquired cyclic esotropia.

This case report presents the diagnosis and management of an adult patient with cyclic esotropia, a rare and poorly understood form of strabismus, that is characterized by alternating periods of manifest strabismus and orthotropia. Few cases of adult-onset cyclic strabismus have been reported.

A 12-year-old girl who developed a cyclic esotropia following strabismus surgery for intermittent exotropia at the age of eight years is presented. Unusual findings and surgical results are described. We suggest the term of "consecutive cyclic esotropia" for this clinical entity.
