Observations on the Biology of Cylas formicarius Fabricius at Coimbatore

Madras Agricultural Journal, 1959
Cylas, formicarius Fabricius, commonly known as the sweet potato weevil, is a well known cosmopolitan insect, which causes serious damage to sweet potato (Ipomea batatas) both in the field and storage. The loss caused by this pest is very extensive all over the world and in India damage to the extent of 60 to 70% is not uncommon.

Reproductive Properties of Sweet Potato Weevil, Cylas formicarius (Fabricius) (Coleoptera, Brentidae)

UTTAR PRADESH JOURNAL OF ZOOLOGY, 2023
Sweet potato weevil (SPW), Cylas formicarius is a serious pest of sweet potato causing extensive damage to tubers. The present study investigates the reproductive properties of sweet potato weevil in laboratory conditions. Current investigation revealed that sexual maturity of SPW was attained on 5th Days After Emergence (DAE) as in the case of male ...

Diurnal Periodicity of Death-Feigning in Cylas formicarius (Coleoptera: Brentidae)

Journal of Insect Behavior, 2001
Diurnal periodicity of death-feigning behavior, or thanatosis, was found in adults of the sweet potato weevil, Cylas formicarius (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Brentidae). The proportion of death-feigned weevils was significantly lower at night than in the daytime only in males.

RESISTANCE IN SWEET POTATOES TO THE SWEETPOTATO WEEVIL, CYLAS FORMICARIUS ELEGANTULUS (SUMMERS)1

Journal of Entomological Science, 1985
Fourteen sweet potato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam] cultivars and varieties were examined for resistance to the sweetpotato weevil [Cylas formicarius elegantulus (Summers)] in artificially infested fields in Yoakum, TX. One cultivar W-226, appeared to have a greater level of resistance than the other cultivars examined.

Copulation reduces the duration of death-feigning behaviour in the sweetpotato weevil, Cylas formicarius

Animal Behaviour, 2009
Although there have been numerous studies on the effects of mating history on mating behaviour, few studies have reported the relationship between mating history and other contextual behaviours such as foraging and predator avoidance. We examined the effect of mating history on death-feigning behaviour (an antipredator behaviour) in the sweetpotato ...

Dispersal Potential of Male Cylas formicarius (Coleoptera: Brentidae) Over Land and Water

Environmental Entomology, 1997
To determine the size needed for buffer zones in an eradication program, dispersal ability of male Cylas formicarius (F.) was evaluated by the mark-release-capture method in the central part of Okinawa Island, Japan. Approximately 36,700 marked males were released from 2 islets. Forty-five pheromone traps were placed on 6 islets near Okinawa Island and

CONTROL OF CYLAS FORMICARIUS USING ENTOMOPATHOGENIC NEMATODES ISOLATED FROM HAWAIʻI

Nematropica
Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN) have potential to control the sweetpotato weevil (SPW; Cylas formicarius). Laboratory tests were conducted using Steinernema feltiae MG-14, Oscheius tipulae OA-12, and Heterorhabditis indica OM-160 isolated from Hawaiʻi on larvae of SPW in infection courts. Subsequently, S. feltiae was tested for effectiveness at 0.5, 1.
