Approximating Optimal Release in a Deterministic Model for the Sterile Insect Technique

open access: yesInternational Journal of Agronomy, Volume 2016, Issue 1, 2016., 2016
Cost/benefit analyses are essential to support management planning and decisions before launching any pest control program. In particular, applications of the sterile insect technique (SIT) are often prevented by the projected economic burden associated with rearing processes.

An Insight into Sweet Potato Weevils Management: A Review

open access: yesPsyche: A Journal of Entomology, Volume 2015, Issue 1, 2015., 2015
Sweet potato is an important food crop that is grown widely in tropical and subtropical regions. Sweet potato weevil is the most disastrous pest affecting sweet potato plantations, causing millions of dollars losses annually. An effective integrated pest management (IPM) method will help to prevent economic losses, and it is crucial to understand the ...

Effect of Tillage, Irrigation, and Nutrient Levels on Growth and Yield of Sweet Potato in Rice Fallow

open access: yesInternational Scholarly Research Notices, Volume 2012, Issue 1, 2012., 2012
A field experiment was conducted during the year 2007‐2008 and 2008‐2009 in Bhubaneswar, India to study the effect of tillage, irrigation and nutrient levels on growth and yield of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) in rice fallow. The results revealed that the conventional tillage system of sweet potato planting recorded maximum fresh root yield ...

Chemical Composition and Biological Activity of the Essential Oil from Jamaican

open access: yesNatural Product Communications, 2012
The chemical composition of the essential oil obtained from the aerial parts of Cleome serrata by hydrodistillation was analyzed by employing GC-FID, GC-MS and RI. Fourteen compounds comprising 90.4% of the total oil composition were characterized.

Impact of Host Plant Resistance on Emergence, Body Parameters, and Supercooling Point of Cylas formicarius elegantulus (Coleoptera: Brentidae) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
Sweetpotato weevil, Cylas formicarius elegantulus (Summers) (Coleoptera: Brentidae), an in-field and storage pest of sweetpotato, is the primary insect constraint to sweetpotato production in tropical and subtropical regions.

Pengendalian hama penggerek ubi jalar Cylas formicarius (Fabricus) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) menggunakan cendawan entomopatogen Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemen

open access: yesJurnal Entomologi Indonesia, 2016
Cylas formicarius (Fabricus) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is one of the major pest on sweetpotato which can cause yield lost up to 100%. The objective of this study was to obtain the effective and efficiency control technique of sweetpotato weevils.

The evolution of positive allometry and exaggerated traits in a diverse beetle clade

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 38, Issue 5, Page 1265-1283, May 2024.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Understanding variation in trait allometry and the drivers of variation in sexually selected traits is a major theme in evolutionary biology. The static allometries of sexually selected traits are often positive due to disproportional investment by large individuals ...

A review of thanatosis (death feigning) as an anti-predator behaviour [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Thanatosis—also known as death-feigning and, we argue more appropriately, tonic immobility (TI)—is an under-reported but fascinating anti-predator strategy adopted by diverse prey late on in the predation sequence, and frequently following physical ...

Assessing the sterility and quality of gamma‐irradiated pepper weevils, Anthonomus eugenii (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), toward the development of the sterile insect technique

open access: yesPest Management Science, Volume 80, Issue 4, Page 1692-1701, April 2024.
Pepper weevil were treated with gamma radiation at the pupal stage to investigate its impact on reproduction and quality. Male and female pepper weevils irradiated with 110 Gy as late‐stage pupae were effectively sterilized and also had decreased fecundity, longevity and spontaneous flight activity.
