Immune- and nonimmune-compartment-specific interferon responses are critical determinants of herpes simplex virus-induced generalized infections and acute liver failure [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The interferon (IFN) response to viral pathogens is critical for host survival. In humans and mouse models, defects in IFN responses can result in lethal herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) infections, usually from encephalitis.

A Pressure Microsensor Made of Parylene‐C for Use as Medical Implant

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
A monolithic parylene‐C pressure sensor with gold strain gauges provides 6.2 μV$\mu{\rm V}$·mmHg$\cdot{\rm mmHg}$−1$^{-1}$ sensitivity. The morphology of a sputtered thin film strain sensor is granular/columnar, which results in a high gauge factor of 7.5. Thermal bonding and parylene‐C coating create a hermetic cavity.

Targeting Specific Checkpoints in the Management of SARS-CoV-2 Induced Cytokine Storm

open access: yesLife, 2022
COVID-19-infected patients require an intact immune system to suppress viral replication and prevent complications. However, the complications of SARS-CoV-2 infection that led to death were linked to the overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines known ...

Natural Products Inspired Scaffold Diversification Leads to Unnatural Molecular Warhead and Covalent Strategy to Modulating Protein Function through Electrophilic Bromine Transfer

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We report a new thiolate‐reactive α,α‐gem‐dibromo lactam warhead that activates transcription factor Nrf2 and demonstrates anti‐inflammatory activities, which have implications in cancer, neurodegeneration, and cardiovascular diseases. RNA‐seq illuminated detailed transcriptional profiles, and chemical reactions with cysteine‐containing compounds ...

Into the storm: the imbalance in the yin-yang immune response as the commonality of cytokine storm syndromes

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology
There is a continuous cycle of activation and contraction in the immune response against pathogens and other threats to human health in life. This intrinsic yin-yang of the immune response ensures that inflammatory processes can be appropriately ...

Immune response and cytokine storm in SARS-CoV-2 infection: Risk factors, ways of control and treatment

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Inflammation, 2022
In 2020, a deadly pandemic caused by the SARS-COV-2 virus spread worldwide and killed many people. In some viral infections, in addition to the pathogenic role of the virus, impaired immune function leads to inflammation and further damage in internal ...

Improved survival of SARS COV-2-infected K18-hACE2 mice treated with adenosine A2AR agonist

open access: yesHeliyon, 2023
A life-threatening manifestation of Covid-19 infection is a cytokine storm that requires hospitalization and supplemental oxygen. Various strategies to reduce inflammatory cytokines have had some success in limiting cytokine storm and improving survival.

Investigation into the Causes and Severity of the 1918 Influenza Pandemic [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The 1918 Influenza outbreak is regarded as one of the worst pandemics in human history due to its widespread effects across the globe and its high death rate.

Allograft and Xenograft Acceptance under FK‐506 and Other Immunosuppressant Treatment [PDF]

open access: yes, 1993
We will focus on two issues, both involving, but not confined to FK-506: first, the meaning of the graft acceptance, which is, after all, the objective of immunosuppression for the transplant surgeon; and second, how to take the next great step of ...

A brief overview of current drug repurposing approaches for COVID-19 management [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
This brief overview is intended to shed light on the current drug repositioning (also called drug repurposing) in the therapeutics of the novel coronavirus disease which emerged in 2019 (COVID-19).
