Abstract. We describe a case of focal cytomegalovirus iritis in a patient with acquired imunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) who had CMV retinitis. The autopsy showed histologic evidence of focal iritis in the left eye. This iritis was characterized by infiltration of acute inflammatory cells mixed with cytomegalic cells, which was confirmed by CMV ...

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the most common recognized pathogen in the first six months after renal transplantation. 1-4 Although once considered a commensal organism, evidence is now overwhelming that CMV is a major cause of posttransplant fever and leukopenia in renal allograft recipients, and is often responsible for pneumonitis, hepatitis, retinitis ...

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), a betaherpesvirus, represents the major infectious cause of birth defects, as well as an important pathogen for immunocompromised individuals. The viral nucleocapsid containing a linear double-stranded DNA of 230 kb is surrounded by a proteinaceous tegument, which is itself enclosed by a loosely applied lipid bilayer ...

Congenital cytomegalovirus disease is an unsolved public health problem, unlikely to be solved by means other than immune prophylaxis. Development of a vaccine has been hampered by low awareness of the problem, which is caused by the often delayed detection of abnormalities after birth. Nevertheless, cytomegalovirus vaccine development is active.

Cytomegalovirus and Schizophrenia
CNS Drugs, 2006Several lines of evidence suggest that cytomegalovirus (CMV) may play an aetiological role in schizophrenia. Epidemiologically, both have a worldwide distribution and an increased prevalence in lower socioeconomic groups. Studies have reported that some patients experiencing initial episodes of schizophrenia have increased levels of IgG antibodies ...

Congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the leading viral intrauterine infection in the United States. It causes more developmental delays and long-term sequelae than Down syndrome (trisomy 21), neural tube defects, or fetal alcohol syndrome combined. Yet, this virus, a member of the herpes virus family, is not well known to the public and its prevention ...

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) keratitis, albeit an uncommon manifestation of this ubiquitous pathogen, can lead to devastating ocular morbidity. Timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment are also unfortunately uncommon. Although commonly asymptomatic, congenital CMV infection is the leading cause of nonhereditary SNHL. Other sequelae that may be evident only after the neonatal period can include chorioretinitis, neurodevelopmental delay with mental or motor impairment, and microcephaly.

The cytomegalovirus (CMV) antigenemia test is a new direct method of diagnosing active CMV infection. The test is based on immunocytochemical detection of CMV immediate early antigens in blood leukocytes. Technical aspects and pitfalls are discussed. The diagnostic merits of the test are compared with those of other methods, such as isolation of virus ...

Cytomegalovirus and atherosclerosis
BioEssays, 1995AbstractFinding that an avian herpesvirus can cause atherosclerosis in chickens prompted studies of human herpesviruses in human atherosclerosis. Antigens and nucleic acid sequences of cytomegalovirus (CMV), a widespread member of the herpesvirus family, were found in arterial lesions in human atherosclerosis, but infectious virus has not been observed.
