Quantitative Phase Imaging for Label-Free Analysis of Cancer Cells—Focus on Digital Holographic Microscopy

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2018
To understand complex biological processes, scientists must gain insight into the function of individual living cells. In contrast to the imaging of fixed cells, where a single snapshot of the cell’s life is retrieved, live-cell imaging allows ...

Season does not have a deleterious effect on proportions of stallion seminal plasma proteins

open access: yesThe Journal of Reproduction and Development, 2020
The mechanism by which the content of the major groups of seminal plasma proteins in stallion semen changes between the breeding and non-breeding seasons remains unknown.

Evaluation and modification of tumor cell isolation techniques from malignant effusions for rapid drug sensitivity testing

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Non‐small cell lung cancer targeted treatment is limited to a few known genetic alterations, with few alternatives in advanced treatment lines. To direct treatment decisions by drug sensitivity testing (DST), this study compared several methods for tumor cell isolation from malignant effusions, pointing to repeated CD45+ cell depletion for effective ...

Cytomegalovirus infection is common in prostate cancer and antiviral therapies inhibit progression in disease models

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Human cytomegalovirus infection is common in normal prostate epithelium, prostate tumor tissue, and prostate cancer cell lines. CMV promotes cell survival, proliferation, and androgen receptor signaling. Anti‐CMV pharmaceutical compounds in clinical use inhibited cell expansion in prostate cancer models in vitro and in vivo, motivating investigation ...

Endoglin mediates the tumor‐ and metastasis‐promoting traits of stromal myofibroblasts in human breast carcinomas

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Carcinoma‐associated fibroblasts (CAFs) in tumors influence cancer progression. We identified endoglin (ENG) as a key factor in TGF‐β signaling in myofibroblastic CAFs (myCAFs), linked to poor breast cancer outcomes. Inhibiting ENG on myCAFs suppressed the TGF‐β‐Smad2/3 pathway, reducing primary tumor growth and metastasis.

miCAT: A toolbox for analysis of cell phenotypes and interactions in multiplex image cytometry data

open access: yesNature Methods, 2017
Single-cell, spatially resolved omics analysis of tissues is poised to transform biomedical research and clinical practice. We have developed an open-source, computational histology topography cytometry analysis toolbox (histoCAT) to enable interactive ...

Targeting carbonic anhydrase IX/XII prevents the anti‐ferroptotic effect of stromal lactic acid in prostate carcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In prostate carcinoma, lactic acid, secreted by highly glycolytic cancer‐associated fibroblasts, is imported into tumor cells through the MCT1 transporter and prevents RSL3 and erastin‐induced ferroptosis (A). Targeting of carbonic anhydrase IX/XII, the main extracellular pH regulators, in tumor and stromal cells reduces microenvironmental acidosis and

Exploring the role of cyclin D1 in the pathogenesis of multiple myeloma beyond cell cycle regulation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Cyclin D1 overexpression altered the cell adhesion pathway, while cyclin D2 upregulation had less impact on pathway enrichment analysis. Multiple myeloma (MM) patients with cyclin D1 overexpression showed reduced CD56 expression and increased circulating tumor cells (CTC) levels, suggesting that cyclin D1 may contribute to MM cell dissemination ...
