Advances in cytoplasmic male sterility phenotype and infertility mechanism

open access: yesGuangxi Zhiwu
The presence of some specialized open reading frames(ORFs)within plant mitochondrial genomes can cause the failure of male gamete production or their abnormal fertilization, which is referred to as cytoplasmic male sterility(CMS).

Long‐Term Effects of Xenotransplantation of Human Enteric Glia in an Immunocompetent Rat Model of Acute Brain Injury

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Acute brain injuries are characterized by extensive tissue damage, resulting in debilitating deficits in patients. Despite considerable progress, cell‐based approaches have yet to identify an ideal candidate. This long‐term study explores the use of an untested cell source – human enteric glia – and a non‐invasive administration route – intranasal ...

Analysis of the Maize dicer-like1 Mutant, fuzzy tassel, Implicates MicroRNAs in Anther Maturation and Dehiscence [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Sexual reproduction in plants requires development of haploid gametophytes from somatic tissues. Pollen is the male gametophyte and develops within the stamen; defects in the somatic tissues of the stamen and in the male gametophyte itself can result in ...

Origins of rice cytoplasmic male sterility genes [PDF]

open access: yesCell Research, 2016
Cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) factors have long been known in some wild plants, and also in some domesticated species, where they are used to produce plants to be used as maternal parents, for example to breed hybrids that display hybrid vigor. Their origins have been mystifying, and now a study recently published in Cell Research helps understand ...

BioCNTs Mediated Delivery of Systemically Mobile Small RNAs via Leaf Spray to Control Both Tomato DNA and RNA Viruses

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A carbon nanotube‐based biopesticide system (BioCNTs) enables efficient delivery and systemic movement of RNAi molecules to control major tomato viruses. By integrating shRNA and tRNA‐like structures (TLS) with BioCNTs, this green and scalable approach achieves long‐term silencing and high antiviral efficacy through simple foliar spraying.

Vitamin D Regulates Olfactory Function via Dual Transcriptional and mTOR‐Dependent Translational Control of Synaptic Proteins

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Vitamin D (VitD) modulates olfactory function by remodeling dendrodendritic synapses in tufted cells through vitamin D receptor‐dependent transcriptional and translational mechanisms. VitD regulates synaptic protein translation partially via mTOR signaling.

Wolbachia versus dengue: Evolutionary forecasts. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
A novel form of biological control is being applied to the dengue virus. The agent is the maternally transmitted bacterium Wolbachia, naturally absent from the main dengue vector, the mosquito Aedes aegypti.
