1H NMR metabolomics and lipidomics analysis of neutrophils reveals biomarkers of ageing, inflammageing and frailty

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Using 1H NMR metabolomics, we measured polar and lipid metabolites from human blood neutrophils from people with frailty (n = 31, mean age 84Y), people with rheumatoid arthritis (n = 16, mean age 55Y), robust older (n = 24, mean age 66Y) and healthy younger people (n = 21, mean age 22Y).

The role of neutrophils in the pathophysiology of inflammatory bowel diseases

open access: yesPeriodontology 2000, EarlyView.
Abstract Objectives Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) encompasses a spectrum of chronic disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, with a potential bidirectional relationship with periodontitis. Neutrophils are key regulators of immune‐inflammatory responses and play a major role in both diseases.

Anterior chamber paracentesis cytology (cytospin technique) for the diagnosis of intraocular lymphoma [PDF]

open access: yesBritish Journal of Ophthalmology, 2006
To report on the diagnosis of intraocular lymphoma by aqueous cytology.Four patients suspected of having intraocular lymphoma were evaluated by anterior chamber (AC) paracentesis with cytology (cytospin technique). All had a history of non-ocular lymphoma and presented with at least one plus anterior chamber cells despite intensive glucocorticoid ...

A Two‐Dimensional Plot of Cell Aggregates and Their Largest Nuclei Distinguishes Benign From Malignant Pleural Effusion Cytology Specimens

open access: yesCytopathology, Volume 37, Issue 4, Page 371-381, July 2026.
Scatter plots from all cases were categorized into four plot types. Cytologically negative cases mainly exhibited Small cluster (S‐type) and Horizontal (H‐type) patterns, whereas cytologically positive cases predominantly showed Vertical (V‐type) and Diagonal (D‐type) patterns.

Representative, confocal images of a cytospin of an enriched peripheral blood sample from a SCCHN patient.

open access: yes, 2013
This is the same patient sample used to create the cytospin presented in Figure 4. However, for this specific, four color staining, the anti-EGFR antibody was replaced with anti-CD44.

Humanized and Charge‐Optimized CSPG4‐Specific CAR‐T Cells show Enhanced Efficacy against Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 35, 24 June 2026.
CSPG4 is identified as a high‐value, stemness‐associated target in HPV‐negative HNSCC. By implementing rational biophysical engineering, a humanized and charge‐optimized CAR is developed to overcome tonic signaling‐induced exhaustion. This strategy induces a profound transcriptomic shift toward a rejuvenated, stem‐like memory state, significantly ...

Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma: Diagnosis by Ultrasound‐Guided Fine‐Needle Aspiration—Cyto‐Histological Correlation and Experience at a Multidisciplinary Tertiary Reference Center

open access: yesDiagnostic Cytopathology, Volume 54, Issue 6, Page 403-416, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is characterized by its poor prognosis. Cytology is essential for diagnostic confirmation and ancillary studies. The endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) set a precedent, facilitating cytological sampling through fine‐needle aspiration (FNA), with a sensitivity of 93% and a specificity of 95%.

Utility of a limited panel of calretinin and Ber-EP4 immunocytochemistry on cytospin preparation of serous effusions: A cost-effective measure in resource-limited settings

open access: yes, 2011
Background: Differentiation between reactive, but morphologically atypical, mesothelial cells and adenocarcinoma in effusions can be problematic. Elaborate immunohistochemical panels have been devised.

A Reappraisal on the Potential Ability of Human Neutrophils to Express and Produce IL-17 Family Members In Vitro: Failure to Reproducibly Detect It

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2018
Neutrophils are known to perform a series of effector functions that are crucial for the innate and adaptive responses, including the synthesis and secretion of a variety of cytokines.

Cytologic Findings in Esophageal Perforation: An Institutional Experience With Pleural Fluid Specimens

open access: yesDiagnostic Cytopathology, Volume 54, Issue 6, Page 429-435, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Introduction Esophageal perforation (EP) is a rare but life‐threatening condition, and most cases are due to iatrogenic causes. The rest occur spontaneously, due to malignancies, or trauma. The mortality rates can approach 50%, and delayed diagnosis of EP exacerbates patient outcomes.
