Killing Mechanisms of Cytotoxic T Lymphocytes

Physiology, 1998
Cytotoxic T lymphocytes mediate lysis of target cells by various mechanisms, including exocytosis of lytic proteins (perforin, granzymes) and receptor-ligand binding of Fas/APO molecules. Death of target cells is characterized by either necrosis or apoptosis, depending on the killing mechanism used and on the metabolism of the target cell itself.

Calreticulin in Cytotoxic Lymphocyte-Mediated Cytotoxicity

2003
New functions are implicated for calreticulin, based on its release from cytotoxic NK and T cells. Calreticulin is the only one of six “KDEL” (Lys-Asp-Glu-Leu carboxy terminal) endoplasmic reticulum chaperone proteins present in cytotoxic granules of these lymphocytes.

Targeting and Activation of Cytotoxic Lymphocytes

2015

Cytotoxic T Lymphocytes in Resistance to Tuberculosis

1998
Recent experimental evidence has suggested T cells recognizing antigens in the context of both classical MHC class I and nonclassical class I-like molecules contribute to protective responses against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) infection. Our aims were to characterize both types of T cells, and to explore the basis of communication between the ...

Cytotoxic lymphocyte‐mediated immunotherapy

Australian and New Zealand Journal of Medicine, 1995
Abstract:Cytotoxic CD8+ T cells and NK cells play a role in the elimination of some viruses, graft rejection, antitumour responses, immuno regulation and some autoimmune diseases. The central importance of these cells in each of these immune responses and the therapeutic potential they offer, when effectively targeted, has justified continued interest ...

The role of cytotoxicity in lymphocyte homeostasis

Current Opinion in Immunology, 2001
Several human inherited immune disorders lead to the same fatal lymphoproliferative syndrome, called the hemophagocytic syndrome. Through defective perforin expression or transport, these disorders highlight the determinant role of the secretory cytotoxic pathway in the regulation of the immune response and in lymphocyte homeostasis.

Cytotoxic lymphocytes in melanoma patients

International Journal of Cancer, 1972
AbstractPeripheral blood lymphocytes from 61 melanoma patients were tested by a microcytotoxicity test for cell‐mediated immunity against melanoma cells. Lymphocytes from 13/25 patients were cytotoxic for autologous tumour cells, while lymphocytes from 31/56 patients were cytotoxic in the allogeneic situation.

Collaboration of helper and cytotoxic T lymphocytes

European Journal of Immunology, 1993
AbstractCytotoxic T lymphocytes are major effector cells in responses to viral infections and in allograft rejection and are implicated in many other immunological reactions. Efficient induction of cytotoxic activity in these cells in many but not all cases depends upon helper Tand antigen‐presenting cells so that at least three different cell types ...
