Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

ROLE OF VITAMIN D IN THE EFFICIENCY OF ANTIRESORPTIVE THERAPY

open access: yesСовременная ревматология, 2009
Vitamin D deficiency is one of the substantiated risk factors of osteoporosis. This vitamin is required to provide intestinal calcium absorption, bone metabolism regulation, and neuromuscular functions in the body.

R&D Efficiency for Pharmaceutical Companies in the EU [PDF]

open access: yesInternational journal of economics and statistics, 2013
This study constructs research and development (R&D) as a factor of productivity of European pharmaceutical industry. We introduce an empirical model derived from the Data Envelopment Analysis model to calculate R&D and efficiencies for selected European pharmaceutical companies.

Measuring the change in R&D efficiency of the Japanese pharmaceutical industry – revised [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
This paper presents a DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis)/ Malmquist index methodology for measuring the R&D efficiency change of the Japanese pharmaceutical industry.Letting each of ten firms in each year be a separate DMU (Decision-Making Unit) and ...

By dawn or dusk—how circadian timing rewrites bacterial infection outcomes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The circadian clock shapes immune function, yet its influence on infection outcomes is only beginning to be understood. This review highlights how circadian timing alters host responses to the bacterial pathogens Salmonella enterica, Listeria monocytogenes, and Streptococcus pneumoniae revealing that the effectiveness of immune defense depends not only

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Drawing blanks and winning: Quantifying global catastrophic risk associated with human ingenuity

open access: yesSustainable Futures
In his Vulnerable World Hypothesis Nick Bostrom recently compared invention to drawing balls out of a giant urn containing at least one black ball (i.e. an invention that would destroy civilization).

Molecular bases of circadian magnesium rhythms across eukaryotes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Circadian rhythms in intracellular [Mg2+] exist across eukaryotic kingdoms. Central roles for Mg2+ in metabolism suggest that Mg2+ rhythms could regulate daily cellular energy and metabolism. In this Perspective paper, we propose that ancestral prokaryotic transport proteins could be responsible for mediating Mg2+ rhythms and posit a feedback model ...

The single-incision laparoscopic surgery technique has questionable advantages in colorectal surgery

open access: yesInnovative Surgical Sciences, 2018
Laparoscopic procedures have increasingly been accepted as standard in surgical treatment of benign and malignant entities, resulting in a continuous evolution of operative techniques. Since one of the aims in laparoscopic colorectal surgery is to reduce
