Biological and Biologically Inspired Functional Nanostructures: Insights into Structural, Optical, Thermal, and Sensing Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Biological and biologically‐inspired functional nanostructures with structural, thermal, optical, and sensing applications are reviewed. The role of nanoscale features in biological materials on performance is described, and their blueprints are used for bio‐inspired nanomaterials, synthesized using advanced techniques (i.e., photolithography, bio ...

Effects of Oral Glucosamine Hydrochloride Administration on Plasma Free Amino Acid Concentrations in Dogs

open access: yesMarine Drugs, 2011
We examined the effects of oral glucosamine hydrochloride (GlcN), N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (GlcNAc) and D-glucose (Glc) administration on plasma total free amino acid (PFAA) concentrations in dogs. The PFAA concentrations increased in the control group and

N‐Containing Carbon Materials in Metal‐Free and Non‐Noble Metal Liquid Phase Heterogenous Catalysis

open access: yesAdvanced Synthesis &Catalysis, EarlyView.
Over 100 examples of non‐noble metal supported on N‐containing and metal‐free N‐containing carbon catalysts are discussed. Particular emphasis is put on how different N‐functionalities influence catalyst performance and stability. Preparation procedures are also examined, with a strong focus on how the heat treatment temperature influences N ...

Applications and interest of chitin, chitosan and their derivatives in enology

open access: yesOENO One, 2005
This review treats of the possible use interest of chitin, chitosan and derivatives in enology. Chitosan and chitin are polysaccharide polymers containing more than 5 000 glucosamine and acetylglucosamine units, respectively, and their molecular weights ...

Molecular Insights into Fungal Glycosylphosphatidylinositol Transamidase Complex

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) biosynthesis pathway is critical for antifungal drug development. This study reports three cryo‐electron microscopy structures of fungal GPI transamidase (GPIT), captured in two substrate‐bound states and a novel dimeric assembly.

Drosophila GFAT1 and GFAT2 enzymes encode obligate developmental functions

open access: yesFly, 2020
Glutamine: fructose-6-phosphate amidotransferase (GFAT) enzymes catalyse the first committed step of the hexosamine biosynthesis pathway (HBP) using glutamine and fructose-6-phosphate to form glucosamine-6-phosphate (GlcN6P). Numerous species (e.g. mouse,

Chelation capability of chitosan and chitosan derivatives: Recent developments in sustainable corrosion inhibition and metal decontamination applications

open access: yesCurrent Research in Green and Sustainable Chemistry, 2021
Chemically, chitosan is composed of random distributed D-glucosamine and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine units joint together by β-1,4-glycosidic linkage. Chitosan and its derivatives are widely used as corrosion inhibition and removal metallic impurities ...

Degradation of N-Acetyl-D-glucosamine and D-Glucosamine in Subcritical Water and Properties of the Degradation Products

open access: yesFood Science and Technology Research, 2011
The degradation processes of N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (GlcNAc) and D-glucosamine in subcritical water were measured using a continuous tubular reactor at 170 to 210°C, and at 190 to 230°C, respectively. The degradation processes obeyed first-order kinetics in the tested temperature ranges.

Temperature Thresholds Govern Microbial‐Mediated Dissolved Organic Carbon Dynamics in Coastal Ecosystems

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Coastal dissolved organic carbon (DOC) represents one of the largest reduced carbon pools on Earth, and they are influenced by temperature. Across 7.6–35.9 °C ranges, the microbial‐mediated DOC dynamics is characterized by three temperature thresholds.

Antitumor activities of D-glucosamine and its derivatives [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Zhejiang University SCIENCE B, 2006
The growth inhibitory effects of D-glucosamine hydrochloride (GlcNH(2).HCl), D-glucosamine (GlcNH(2)) and N-acetyl glucosamine (NAG) on human hepatoma SMMC-7721 cells in vitro were investigated. The results showed that GlcNH(2).HCl and GlcNH(2) resulted in a concentration-dependent reduction in hepatoma cell growth as measured by MTT (3-(4,5 ...
