A Model of the Economic Costs of Dairy Calf Mortality
American Journal of Veterinary Research, 1973SUMMARY A mathematical model was designed to investigate and quantify the economic loss associated with dairy calf mortality. Application of the model was made using hypothetical yet realistic data from an average farm. Evaluation of these data indicated that a 20% calf mortality rate resulted in 38% reduction of net profit.

Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 1973SUMMARY A survey of 77 Michigan dairy herds during 1971 revealed calf mortality of 17.7% between birth and 60 days of age; calves born dead or dying during birth accounted for 6.4%, those that died during the period from birth to 14 days of age, 8.5%, and those that died between 2 weeks and 2 months of age, 2.8%.
