The Effects of Carbonation on Damping Capacity of Reinforced Concrete Materials

open access: yes, 2010
Carbonation of cementitious materials results in a reduction of the pH value which makes the material less alkaline and leads to unsightly spalling on structures.

Micropillar‐Engineered Hybrid Adhesive Patch for Surface‐Conformable and Directional Adhesion

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
This work presents a surface‐conformable hybrid adhesive integrating height‐optimized hexagonal micropillars with open‐rectangular cuts. The micropillars enhance rough‐surface contact and microscale crack arrest, while the cuts guide and reverse interfacial cracks for strong and directional adhesion. The multiscale architecture achieves robust pull‐off

Transducers Across Scales and Frequencies: A System‐Level Framework for Multiphysics Integration and Co‐Design

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Transducers convert physical signals into electrical and optical representations, yet each mechanism is bounded by intrinsic trade‐offs across bandwidth, sensitivity, speed, and energy. This review maps transduction mechanisms across physical scale and frequency, showing how heterogeneous integration and multiphysics co‐design transform isolated ...

Dynamic mechanical damping analysis of up/step-quenched Cu-Zn-Sn-based shape memory alloys

open access: yesMaterials Research Express
The effect of thermal quenching procedures on the damping properties of Cu-Zn-Sn-based SMAs is reported. Three compositions of Cu-Zn-Sn-based SMAs designated A (Cu-15.6Zn-12.1Sn), B (Cu-26.1Zn-9.3Sn), and C (Cu-29.6Zn-8.9Sn) samples produced by the ...

Additively Manufactured Porous Ceramics as Tunable Dielectrics for Passive Temperature Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Porous ceramic lattices, 3D‐printed from a multicomponent oxide ink, are integrated with LC resonators for passive wireless temperature sensing. By tuning porosity, the dielectric properties and RF response are engineered to produce distinct resonant frequency shifts with temperature. The results establish a structure‐driven approach to customizing the

Damping capacity of thermoelastic martensite in shape memory alloys

open access: yes, 2003
Shape memory alloys attract increasing interest as materials that can be used for passive as well as active damping applications. The passive high damping capacity finds its origin in the thennoelastic martensitic phase due to the hysteretic mobility of ...
