Some Features of Geometric Nonlinear Damping on Isolation Performance

open access: yesJournal of Physics: Conference Series, 2019
Abstract The addition of nonlinear characteristics to improve the dynamic performance of isolation systems and vibration absorbers has been extensively investigated in the past decades. Both nonlinear stiffness and nonlinear damping have been largely analysed. A common way in which this can be achieved in practice, is by arranging linear

Generating Unconventional Spin‐Orbit Torques With Patterned Phase Gradients in Tungsten Thin Films

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT A key aim in spintronics is to achieve current‐induced magnetization switching via spin‐orbit torques without external magnetic fields. For this, the focus of recent work has been on introducing controlled lateral gradients across ferromagnet/heavy‐metal devices, giving variations in thickness, composition, or interface quality.

Rational Tuning of Hygroscopic Oscillation of Stacked Nanoflake Assemblies for Continuous Ambient Energy Harvesting

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Stacked nanoflake assembly (SNA) membranes can oscillate autonomously, offering opportunities for soft actuation and energy harvesting. This work uncovers the physical mechanism behind the sustained oscillation of SNA membranes in gradient humidity and identifies three governing dimensionless parameters, enabling rational design for optimizing SNA ...

A note on the effect of surface contamination in water wave damping [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
Asymptotic formulas are derived for the effect of contamination on surface wave damping in a brimful circular cylinder; viscosity is assumed to be small and contamination is modelled through Marangoni elasticity with insoluble surfactant. It is seen that

Giant Orbital Rashba–Edelstein Effect in Crystalline Cu2O/Cu Heterostructures

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
An enhanced orbital Rashba–Edelstein effect is demonstrated in a crystalline Cu2O/Cu heterostructure, compared to naturally oxidized CuOx structures, highlighting the critical role of crystallinity and interface control in orbital torque generation. The resulting spin torque conductivity exceeds that of Pt, indicating the potential of orbital torque ...

A study of joint damping in metal plates

open access: yes, 2006
For satellite applications the determination of the correct dynamic behaviour and in particular the structural damping is important to assess the vibration environment for the spacecraft subsystems and ultimately their capability to withstand the launch ...

A Geometrically Transient Platform for Bioelectronic Implants

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Minimally invasive bioelectronic implants often compromise performance for smaller sizes. To resolve this optimization dilemma, a wireless bioelectronic implant with a transient geometry is introduced (MiFi). The origami‐inspired device miniaturizes up to sixfold for syringe insertion and autonomously unfolds post‐implantation.
